I recently returned to the UK for my father's 95th birthday and arrived on the day the brexit vote was announced. The day I left Melbourne (23 June) the exchange rate was $1.97 to the pound, by 8th July it had dropped to 1.71. This was a bit of a blow as I had intended to transfer some money to Australia while I was over there, the usual stuff you know, legacy from maidan Aunt's property in Chelsea, sale of old masters etc.
Not to be downhearted I decided to look at the prices of UK sourced astronomy equipment on the assumption that they would have not yet adjusted their prices to reflect the decimation of the pound and found once again that prices are very reasonable. I have previously posted about the Morpheus range of eyepieces and this time I looked at the Explore Scientific 82/24mm eyepiece.
I am now back in Melbourne and this morning received my 82/24mm, it has taken 14 days to arrive here so is not up to Amazon delivery times.
It was bought from Green-Witch in the UK the price was £164 plus £18 postage, total to my door £182 and at today's exchange rate of $1.75 means Aus$ 318.
I have looked at OPT and they are asking US$300 and I am assuming a $50 shipping charge so US350, Aus$ currently is US$0.75 so total cost in Australia is Aus$ 466.
While the £ is staggering a bit it might be a good idea to fill your boots.
Note!
Unfortunately Old Master prooved to be a forgery and Chelsea flat had dry rot and was condemned.
