This thing is lurking in my front garden but I have been educated by my 6yo daughter that fairies live there, and also "Don't touch it Daddy, it might be poisonous".

Probably safe enough to eat but best not to try if you don't know what they are. Interesting porous structure under the caps.

Suillus granulatus, and entirely edible.

Trevor is right. They are safe - I ate these as a kid because my mother (of Armenian extraction) and my father, (Polish) used to pick them from under pine trees growing on a dairy farm over our back fence in Claremont, Tas. They re-assured my sister and me that they grow in Europe too. We ate them pickled, but I was no great fan of them, as I recall.:)

Cheers,
Richard

I wish I knew about edible wild mushrooms or knew someone who could teach me about them and where to pick them. They are so much more tasty than boring old regular ones (that I still enjoy nevertheless).

When you break them if the exposed flesh turns green or blueish best not to eat them.

Steve, there are facebook groups that specialise in this. And usually state based.
Victorian - https://www.facebook.com/groups/154744888028215/
Aust Wild Mush hunters: https://www.facebook.com/groups/AustralianWildMushroomHunters/

I've seen someone die in ICU after eating wild mushrooms. Their partner, who has also consumed the mushrooms, was a bit nervous for a while...

Do you really want to place your faith in a FB page???

David, I am glad people are wary of fungi because there are a lot of nasty ones.
Facebook pages can be as valuable a forum as IIS.
There are a fair few mycologists, and enthusiasts, out there that find FB an excellent forum, just as professionals and enthusiasts do with this forum and Cloudy Nights.
So, yes, happy to place my faith in a FB page.

@Regulus Thanks!

@DavidTrap It depends on how one uses the FB page. If one uses it to seek out experienced pickers, get advice and learn lots more before venturing out, then it can help avoid disaster.

One of the most dangerous things is to just grab a guide book with photos and descriptions (or print off such things from say a FB page) and go picking without taking along someone who knows what they're doing.
