Has anyone tried the Celestron NexImage solar system imager? Is it true that it is a ToUcam in disguise.
I am interested in how well it works for (a) imaging (b) autoguiding.

Hi Geoff.
Quite a few here have them, or have had them, for planetary imaging. For a while we all thought they were a ToUcam in disguise, and I think it's true they use the same chip as the ToUcam.
However teh chipset is different, and those who were frustrated with the neximage went and bought a ToUcam, and the results are much better. I think the neximage chipset introduces a lot more noise into the image.
The ToUcam 900nc is the best of the budget webcams, followed by the ToUcam 840k, followed by the neximage.
You just need an adapter for the ToUcam, which you can get at the same time from the astronomy suppliers that sell teh Toucam. You can also get the adapter from Steve Mogg at Mogg Adapters.

Mike would be spot on in regard to extra grain & noise with the neximage.
Most that have used all 3 would tell you to go the 900nc I'd reckon.

Thanks for the advice. Who sells the ToUcam?

Hey!
Matthew Lovell at Telescopes-Astronomy.com has the ToUcam cos im looking at getting one myself in the near future....the place is in South Australia.
There is the option of also getting the long exposure modification, and he has listed everything else you'd need with it!
He's very helpful!
cheers!
Chris.
