Hi all, about to start my obs build. With the roof I can see how overhanging the roof sheets will protect from the weather along the sides and I can see how vertically overlapping the gable at one end over the wall would protect that end when closed. But how does one weather proof the gable end that rolls back over the obs. I am talking about where the bottom of the gable meets the top of the end wall?

for me, i leave one of the gables in place and overhang the roof slightly so when it rolls on everything ets covered nicely, the back of the observatory i have the gable rolling with the roof and it slightly overhangs the rear wall. there are pictures and a video in my signature. the observatory has stayed dry as a bone throughout many heavy rain storms, it exceeded my expectations.

I use a flap of plastic damp corse from Bunnings. It is black, flexible enough to slide over the track rails, and wide enough to close the gap and act as weather stripping on the gable end. I also use it under the side planks to help seal the track side against wind blown rain. It comes in different widths on rolls and is cost effective. The only time I had to do more to seal the front was in the massive storm we had last April with days of heavy rain and high winds (115kmph) - in that case I used duct tape prior to the storm to seal the edge of the flap on the front gable - no leaks.
Give sme thought to track locks and roof hold downs - these are very important. Good luck with the build.

Another way is to have a 150mm panel across the top of the end wall that hinges down inside the observatory allowing the overhanging gable to roll over the wall. Roll it back and lift up the panel again.

Or, you could do this...

You could use Nylon Brush Sealing Strips, Same as they use on Garage Doors and Refrigeration Rooms etc
