Mac stuff

With the big chuck out at work before the final move date I scored an iMac PC. Screen and Mac all in one with just a keyboard & mouse externally. It ain't super fast but being almost flat it takes up very little room on the work bench, very useful.
But I tried to install Stellarium and it replied that that version wasn't compatible with the OS. It's running OS X. But the only version of Stellarium for Mac is on source forge and I can find no other download.
Any Macsperts out there able to advise on what goes with what and where can I get it. Or any other useful Astro SW for Macs. I have very little experience with them. Just seemed a shame to see it chucked out.

I have been using a IMac for years now it has Mountain Lion on it at the moment but it runs everything in my Observatory .
try down loading Sky Safari it is a excellent planetarium program and the Pro version has a great scope control .
the good thing with the Mac that I find is that it is not constantly updating and I can't remember the last time it crashed come to think of it I don't think it has .I run my Sbig 8300c and PHD guiding on it with no issues I also used my DSLR Canon 450d with Nebulosity 4 another great program for AP .

Your version of osx is too old, it would be an idea to upgrade which is free on the app store

I'll see if I can upgrade the OS, sounds good. I'll check out the other software as well but it won't be used to run the Ob, sorry, I'm a PC man from way back and understand them better despite the constant updates. If I can get Stellarium running on it then I may move it out to the Ob as a reference screen. I can fit it at one side.

....mmmm, but I might investigate running the mount and guiding from it ... options, always options ....

I am running Yosemite 10.10.5. Has anybody here installed El Capitan yet? If so, any problems? Specifically with Astro Planner, PHd2, Sky Safari 4 Pro and Nebulosity. Thanks.

hi Russell I have El Capitan on the home Mac and have had it for a while now very stable I am going to load it on the Obs Mac and see how it goes but I dont see it will be a problem .

OK, so this thing is running 10.4.11 apparently. I need to buy Snow leopard first before it will upgrade to El Capitano or anything else. It is using an Intel processor.
Goes into the 'too hard' basket. I don't need it to do anything, it will just stay as a workshop internet browser. My money needs to go on more useful items astronomically speaking.

Brent, just in case you do change your mind I think Mountain Lion was the best operating system Apple have produced. Others will doubtless know a lot more than me though.

Cheers Russell, I'll check it out but as I said this is just a flukey acquisition. If I can't get it upgraded free I won't bother. Still handy for browsing in the workshop, I'm about to do a full service on the EQ6 and I can keep astrobaby's website and instructions on screen right in front of me while I work.

(Just btw, my surname is Russell, get called it often enough though. )

From the French 'Rousseau' I believe. The Norman connection I know of, probably part of the invasion. I believe there is a connection back to the old 'White Russia' as well. My brother is into the genealogy thing and has some info but not much on our fathers side.

Thanks Nikolas, it didn't really come across that you were being helpful. It came across that you didn't want me to "hijack the thread"....that's not entirely unreasonable in any case, had that been my intention. I simply posted to a rather broadly titled thread, which I though was reasonable.....helpful would have been to answer my question, or not.....I think I know how to post, and start new threads, as my recent activity would demonstrate.

As you can see no one has provided you with much else.
It doesn't hurt to start a new thread with the question in the topic. Rather than rely on people to scan and peruse thread and "maybe" answer your question. It's all about achieving the greatest audience.

NOW, I'm sure the other members are finding our repartee very amusing, as admittedly am I. As a newbie I now understand some comments from posters suggesting a miserly attitude by some. Alas communities are made of all sorts!

.....hatchet buried, intentions accepted....alas sold my last bike 9years ago, when child number 1 came along. Always look on enviously. Mrs allows telescopes now but not bikes unless they're the pedal variety. Had a fair few over the years, Dukes and all.
