Broadband help

Hi All:)

I need some help getting connected to broadband.

I have tried twice with no luck:confused:

I get connected but its only at 100 kbps, and when i try and get explorer running it say's can not find connection:confused:

Took it to local computer shop and they had the same thing.
They said I would have to leave my laptop with them for them to find out why.

I'm asking you people first to see if it is something simple.

Laptop is hp pavilion ze 4200. Running xp home edition.

Didn't you get a start up disk to help you with your connection...now a days they normaly supply you with this disk and Broadband modem and its is as easy as 123 to set up..just follow the promps.....with username and password and this also sets up your connection configuration aswell.......

Who is you IP ?
What modem are you useing ?
Did you get Cable broadband or ADSL ?
Is your modem connected via USB or Network card ?
Is this a brand new connection ?

First thing to try for cable/ADSL modem connection is to:
1. shutdown computer
2. reset modem by unplugging modem for 10 seconds & plugging it back in
3. once modem reset itself reboot computer

If that does not work or apply to you then tell us more:

Who's your provider? Did you just sign up?

What sort of broadband? (cable, ADSL, wireless ... ??)

Do you have any other computers on which broadband works ok?

What tells you that you're connected, and the speed of 100kbps?

You could try this link. http://www.ozcableguy.com/ There's a wealth of info there. If you're with Bogpond and have an Alcatel speedtouch router then you can browse the router for clues by typing 10.0.01.38 in IE. I have the same model Laptop and it works fine with ADSL. If you're using XP, the problem could also be the firewall. I'm a bit puzzled as to where you're reading the 100kbps from. Another thing to look out for is changing the initial username and or passwords on line. If you chenge them on line you also need to change them in your router otherwise it will not connect. let me tell you I'm no computer expert:P

I'm with telstra, dial up. They sent me out a adsl modem.

Sent the disc and all. Ran the disk tried usb and ether net connections. Both did not work:whistle:
Well they did, but little icon said only at 100kbps.

Rang telstra help line and spent two hours trying to sort the problem. All to no avail.:confused:

The guy said there was something wrong with my computer.

Person at the shop said it was a setting problem again:confused:

So i can get broadband connected but it will to run as i said in the first post.:confuse3:

Does this information explain any?

Oh i have sent the adsl modem back and will soon be getting a optus modem. I also have a desk top which is old but works ok. It has a etha net connection. I have be told this should work ok.

Setting up ADSL is really easy....you dont actualy have to do anything.....just follow the promps whilst running the set up disk....If Technical support couldn't guide you through this simple setup it does sound like their is something wrong with your computer.....unfortunetly...

If worst comes to worst you may have to load Windows XP again.....sorry

A friend of mine did the recover feature on windows XP once and that was the end of it....couldn't get a connection after that saying a file was missing....caused heaps of problems so he reloaded windows and is all fixed.....

I think they just give you a standard ADSL modem or do they give out Routers now.....I dont think so unless you specify thats what you want at extra costs.....

Sorry I cant help you atm Dave......the problem could be difficult to find without all the exact information and errors...

There's nothing easier than setting up ADSL on windows XP, it pretty much does it itself. I hope the new modem helps..
