Being as I have a seemingly unfixable problem with Registax, I am
wondering if there is any alternative freeware for stacking video.

Autostakkert is what you are after:

I downloaded it, but it won't open my AVI files. Says wrong codec, whatever that means.

Is the AVI file compressed? If so, try using uncompressed recorded avi file and it should work fine. Alternatively use (ser) file format.

Back again. I don't know whether my AVI files are compressed or not, nor
how to find out, and my file converter has over a hundred file types I can convert the AVIs to, but SER is not one of them. Incidentally, in case you were wondering, I am old and not very comp. literate.

Raymo,
Which camera are you using to generate the AVI's??
Have you tried using Registax 5 rather than the new V6 - I sometimes find it work better for me.

Hi Ken, My camera is an 1100D, and of course produces MOVs. I converted the videos to AVI and neither Registax nor Autostakkert would
open them. I realise that it was the wrong AVI [codec problem] so I want
to convert them back to MOV and start again, but can't find any software that will do that.
This is a totally separate problem from the one that Jeff and I have with
Registax. [see adjacent thread].

Raymo,
Which MOV conversion software did you use?
I'm not experienced in MOV files but this one looks promising
http://www.tucows.com/preview/606789/Convert-MOV-To-AVI
then there was
http://download.cnet.com/Free-AVI-to-MOV-Converter/3000-2194_4-75891858.html
to hopefully allow the AVI you created to be returned to a MOV.

Being the forgetful 80ish old fella that I am, I forgot that the videos are still in the camera; I'll just delete the others and download them again.
Thanks for your help Ken. I'll have a look at the two links.

Hi Raymo - try PiPP

https://sites.google.com/site/astropipp/

it reads Canon MOV's, and produces a video that Autostakkert can understand.

It has a whole bunch of other interesting functions for planetary stuff as well.
