I noticed tonight this little icon appear on my task bar. I am running windows 7, and this is apparently caused by an update that came in recently, namely KB3035583. Here is an article on how to remove the annoying little bugger.

Microsoft have really engaged in some deceptive practice here that starts a new type of precendent.
My bet is the hackers will exploit this.
Now that MS feels that its OK to install marketing/advertising applications as part of a "bug fix" in their updates, its paved the way for people to assume that this sort of popup is genuine.

So the next HTML scam will probably have the same looking popup appearing on a web page, with people believing that its just a MS app prompting them that the software is available when in fact its going to be a redirecting you to a viral download site and people will have dropped their guard !

Gday Peter
I removed the KB3035583 a few days back.
What now happens is it reappears as a "new update" every time you check ( as there are 6 new ones again today ).
The really deceptive part here is when you scroll over it, the description is
"Recommended update
Install this update to resolve issues in Windows....."

a Blatant lie.
