Hi Guys, just wondering if anyone could suggest some moderately decent anti virus soft ware for windows 8.1
The one that I am using at the moment and which has only two days left is causing havoc with continuous threat alerts.

Many thanks.

Leon,

I have been using AVG for some years now, it seems to work quite well, it is free and I have been running 8.1 for some time now. I am using Norton on my laptop and I do not like it anywhere as much.

Cheers,
Andrew.

I use Eset Smart Security, have done so for years, it is almost totally seemless and does the job very well. Great price too.

What are you currently using?
I have used Avast (www.avast.com (http://www.avast.com)) for many years - works well for me.

G'day Leon,

I've just gone through this with the licence on my antivirus software expiring.

From my experience having just bought a copy of Norton on ebay, don't do it. I'm sure some people find it ok but for me it was a nightmare.

Only today I finally received a refund. I had several blue screen of death experiences and no support from the seller.

I downloaded the free Windows antivirus that I've used before with no problems whatsoever. I may buy something else in the future but definitely not Norton.

Leon,

This is not really an answer to your question, but this is an interesting read and good lesson about keeping your machine 'clean':

I just use 'Microsoft Security Essentials' - it's free and works just fine. But I'm still on windows 7.

cheers

James

Ok, this what i recommend.

Mban from malwarebytes. it is really good and cleaning catching them
you can get the freeware version, which you have to manually run when desired, or buy for something like $25.00 then it monitors realtime.

The other util is more for cleaning registry and IE files etc etc
is cclean
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner.

I work in IT. so can vouch for these, win8.1 cant have MSsecurity essentials as it already has its own inbuilt version. but that is good for win7 users in combo with above. best protection, other than don't goto sus sights

That should read MBAM ( Malware Bytes Anti Malware ) but it is really just a stinger for a virussed PC. The AV costs money.

But I will recommend AVG Free as was mentioned earlier. I have run it for years at home on many PCs with very few issues. It nags you to upgrade now and then which gives you a bit more protection at your Firewall but the free version is excellent and is not a resource hog. does good quick updates regularly and it's scan is pretty extensive, efficient and quite quick.

I use McAfee ( Enterprise) at work. Expensive but very good. I'll rate AVG well up there for detection and protection not too far behind.

The single best software you can use is MBAM http://www.malwarebytes.org/10/
