Every time I plug my Orion Autoguider into my laptop a search for the driver is started. This has been installed according to instructions but the PC insists on re-installing each time. Other USB devices when plugged in simply result in PC saying new hardware found, .... "device", .... your "device" is ready to use. Why does the machine lose track of the AG driver?

hi robert i can't really advise too many points,

but these spring to mind:
-make sure you are using the same usb port that you had it installed on...
- are you using PHD2? http://www.stark-labs.com/phdguiding.html see red text.

good luck

I didn't realize one had to use the same port. I'll test that out. I thought that once a driver was installed it was there for the whole pc to access.
Yes, I am using PHD2, and the drivers are the latest.
Thanks Rusty,
Robert

Your post came in while I was writing mine. :)
Had a peep at the site and I think I have addressed all the issues raised in that Google posting. I am using WINXP, which maybe a problem although, IMHO, that was the best OS MS produced.

yes it shouldn't matter which port more generally but i think PHD can cause difficulty as it can override and allocate usb ports to functions.

sounds like you're on your way now though.

You don't have to use the same port, but Windows is stupid enough to have to reinstall the drivers every time you use a new one.

If you are using a hub, ALWAYS plug the hub into the same port and ALWAYS plug the camera into the same hub port. You'll save yourself a heap of pain.

If you have USB3 ports anything before Win8 can be a nuisance. They don't enumerate USB3 ports the same way as they do USB2 and some drivers can't cope.

Thanks for your help Rusty. :)
This is becoming a habit with posts coming in as I am writing one. Hi Andrew, thanks for your input too. What you say is what I am experiencing. If it wasn't for the fact the the GStar camera I use has only Windows software to drive it, I'd be running off an Apple. I think 2 laptops running gets a bit messy. But then again.........maybe. Hmmm. Would save a lot of bother.;)
