Hi Guys, maybe someone could shed some light on my printer troubles.

I have a Canon A3 Pixma ix4000 Printer, and when it is working it is a superb machine and prints very well, however today i dose not want to print.

I thought it may have been the fact that i have upgraded to Win 8.1 so i uploaded the drivers to support 8.1, still no movement.

It has been checked cleaned, unplugged and plugged in again, leads changed just in case it was a bad lead, etc, etc.

Anyway this is what i get to before it dose nothing.

Find the photo or document that I want to print.
Click on the file, and choose print, the window comes up.
I choose my printer as i have two loaded.
Click properties and check the printing style i want, like photo or plain paper.
Click OK, and Print.
I hear a noise as if the printer has read the data, and that is it, it dose nothing from this point on. :shrug:

Any suggestions would be helpful, thank you.

Leon,

I had a similar problem with a mouse not working in a Logitech mouse Kbd set. Can't guarantee this technique will work in your case but it's worth a try.
Also take a look at the driver install procedure, some printers won't install correctly if you plug in first then load the driver. Often the technique below of uninstalling the usb device from the device manager, then installing the driver before plugging back in will bring the device back to life.

Using the device manager, see if you can find the printer usb connection, (under the usb section at the bottom) you can identify it by unplugging and re-plugging the printer while watching the usb device list once you find it, right click and select uninstall then let windows re-install the drivers.

No amount of coaxing in my case would get the mouse working again, installing the official Logitech drivers didn't help, once the usb device was uninstalled and allowed to reinstall the problem disappeared.

However it will print when I am doing maintenance like printing a test page or when i have aligned the heads.
So it is working to a point but just wont print a document or photo, so i expect that it is not compatible with windows 8.1 or something like that.
Anyway I have deleted all the drivers and anything else associated with it and will start again from scratch and see what happens.

Are you getting any error messages, such as "B200" or similar?

My Canon iP4850 died with that code & it turned out to be a burned out print head after just 15 months of very sparing use.
It would perform all the tests thrown at it without fail.

iP4850 Printer, when new. = $110.00.
New print head. = $125.50.

Absolutely disgusting prices from Canon.
The print head is classified as a spare part, not a consumable.

That's how they make their money, along with those genuine ink cartridges.

But, they do make a nice printer.

Our local Joyce Mayne had a Canon 3in1 a few months ago for the
measly sum of just $39.00.

I nearly bought 3.

Thanks for the info, well I loaded the printer to my lappy, and it works fine now, so I expect it is the Win 8.1 causing the issues.
I have deleted the printer from the desktop running 8.1 and will now do a re-install.
I will let you know how it all pans out.

Well that didn't work, it works fine on any computer other than the one with 8.1 loaded.

I loaded the driver from the canon website for the Win 8.1, it had two, one 32 bit, and one 64 bit, I loaded the 64 bit one and presume this is correct, maybe i should try the other.

Which version of Windows 8.1 do you have installed? (Windows 8.1 has both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.)

If you fire up Windows Explorer, and right-click on "This PC" (or however your computer identifies itself), it should take you into "Control Panel | System and Security | System". (Or you can navigate into Control Panel using any method of your choice - I'm still confused about Windows 8.1's "split personality" between the Modern UI and the Windows-7-style Desktop mode!) Once there, it will identify the version of Windows you are running - on my Toshiba Encore 8.1" tablet, it says:

"System type: 32-bit Operating System, x64-based processor"

so I need 32-bit drivers.

(Having said that, I would have expected the Canon hardware support site to have some sort of installer that would match the drivers to the OS you are running.)

Thanks Julian, I have tried nearly every driver that Canon says will support this printer and all fail.
As said earlier, the printer works fine on another operating system.
I have just sent a an inquiry to Canon support and asked them a few questions, maybe they can shed some light on the subject.
Or Windows 8.1 simply dose not support this printer :shrug:

Many Thanks guys, I have finally got it printing, I had to send a message to Canon Support and they actually answered me in an hour or two, most surprising, however they sent a link to a driver and went through the process.

Now to fix the false colour. LOL
