Yup. Had a tornado up on the NW Coast in Burnie last night (about 50k away)
'Unusual' would be an understatement

Sustained wind speeds of 154km/h or more would be a Category 2 cyclone (if it were tropical). But I guess for you hardy souls, it's just "a bit breezy". ;)

Ha! Just went outside to get some tools from the obs and a couple of chairs went flying by. Not mine !!
Last year the wind broke my weather station.
I live on the side of mount Wellington so we get those ? Baric winds coming down to smash us unbelievers !!
Makes me worry for my newt out there in its scope stuff coat !

Cheers
Graz

Maatsyker Island has had sustained winds over 100km/h since 5:30pm, in other words for the last 9 hours with gusts well over 100km/h since 6am yesterday! I don't think even hurricanes last this long at a given location. The BOM obs are quite phenomenal.

Mt Wellington peak gust 152km/h. Look up the Tassie obs on the BOM website, look at the western coastal and highland stations. Amazing stuff.

Good grief, you can hardly see Tassie for isobars. That low is down to <970!
