I am having trouble getting my TouCam to capture in 1420 Mode.
It seems to only be working in IYUV mode and I can't get 1420 to work properly.

IYUV gives a grainy pixelated image and will not allow correct setting of Gain and Gamma.

When I switch across to 1420 the image stays black!

Has anyone else had this problem and how do I solve it.

Below are samples of the bad results from tonights efforts with the capture program only working in IYUV Mode.
Trans: 10/10,
Seeing: 8/10. (would have been a 9/10 if not for the thin layer of fog that decended while capturing.

YUK! :(

Oh, by the way, 1420 Mode has always worked before!

Just not tonight for some strange reason.

And as Andrew (astro-South) has noticed, everything has a red colour to it in IYUV!

I've never had a drama using IYUV Ken. Word has it it's best to capture using it over the 1420 mode.

These cams do strange stuff at times. tried disconnecting the camera, rebooting & trying again yet?

Yep, sure have John.

Strange, mine captures a better image in 1420! Much finer detail and focus.
IYUV is terrible in mine. Very pixelated and red! and gamma and Gain will not work properly, whereas in 1420 I get full adjustment.

The only good point mine has in IYUV is I see the Moon in all it's mineral rich colours

I've flipped back & forth between the 2 & I could not detect a difference visually! Buggered if I know what the deal is.

What were your settings mate like brightness, gain blah blah..?

Just to show the difference, here is a stacked image from a few months ago when 1420 was working. Not even put through PhotoShop! Compare it to the above IYUV images.

Yep. It's a case of :shrug::confuse3: :confuse2: & :help3:

Settings for the reddish grainy pics in my first post, captured in IYUV:

Frame rate- 15, 90% brightness (had to just to see it), 75% Gamma, 100% Saturation, 1/25th of a second, 20% Gain.

Stream Format: Frame rate: 15.000, colour space: IYUV (only one that worked tonight), Output size: 640 x 480 (not that it matters).

When I switched to 1420 I tried every imaginable combination of settings. All I got was a black screen. Even with my red torch shining down the barrel!

Have you tried uninstalling the driver, then a full reboot then reinstalling the driver. I have seen problems with devices that suddenly misbehave solved this way.

No I haven't Phil.

Might be worth a try tomorrow  Thanks

Which Mode is supposed to be the best Mode? 1420 or IYUV? I can't find any reviews, chats, comments anywhere about it.

Or would it also be better if I used a different capture program altogether?
A free downloadable one preferably :D

The one I currently use is the one supplied with the TouCam. 'Philips Video Lounge'.

Wow. Theres certainly something weird going on! I'd never use those kinds of settings on the moon, I'd get a totally white screen from being too bright!!

Everyone will tell you to use K3CCDtools. I still use the standard Philips one like you. Anythings worth a shot I guess?

BTW Ken...Don't shoot using 15FPS. 5FPS if the seeing is good to great, 10FPS for anything else..

Thanks John.

I have d/loaded K3ccdtools and I am trying to work out how to use it :eyepop:

At least I got a screenshot of myself in K3ccdtools

and it works in both IYUV and 1420

Another capture tool option Ken is Virtual Dub. Someone introduced me to it a couple of weeks ago (sorry I can't find the thread so I can't give cudos) and it's not too shabby at all. Once you get used to the strange place all the controls are.

I've had the odd problem or two with weird colour and graininess occasionally. My solution was to reset to factory defaults in the Video source controls.

I'd strongly recommend trying k3ccdtools - it's WAY better than the one that comes with the camera. It's very easy to use, and it's free if you get version 1.

IRIS is another good one, and free as well. A bit quirky with the workings, but for most capture it is simple.

Thanks Gary,

I have Iris in my pooter. Didn't know what it was for. When I first got my Toucam I was told it is best to d/load certain programs and Iris was one of them. It is just sitting on my desktop not being used. I shall give it a try too.

Yep Mike, that's the one I have d/loaded and used to get the pic of myself in the post above  Very complicated though, but I'll get there.

Yep that's the one :ashamed: thanks Joe. I've been playing with it now and then. Once I worked out how to do everthing (menus are very different to K3) it was great to use. I especially liked the histogram feature.
