Hello,

I am trying to use either Reigstax or AutoStakkert to stack images of the Moon. I do the usual thing I record an avi file with about 1000 frames. Then I open Austakkert and can not get any useful results at all the images all come out with anomalies, streaks and massive blurred patches.

I have tried setting it to surface and to planet, which doesn't really make much difference.

Registax simply will not open files larger than 800 meg or so which limits the recordings to approx 500-600 frames.

I am using a DMK41 and a 12 inch Dobsonian.

If I trim the avi file to half which includes about 500 frames then it works quite well within Registax 6 and it stacks nicely. Then I can apply the wavelets etc. Registax simply will not open files larger than 800 megs or so (not sure of the exact figure here but close enough).

Autostakket works fine for images of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and just about everything else. But If I try to process a surface image/avi of the Moon or Sun it goes weird.

If anyone has any ideas what is going on I would appreciate it. Limiting to less than 700 frames is limiting the resolution I can obtain.

I should also mention I have tracking on my scope and most of the time it is fairly precise. I do have to set up the scope each night so sometimes the tracking may be slightly off but it really shouldn't be causing this problem.

I often take avis of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn during the same night and they process within AutoStakkert fine even with 1000 frames plus. Same scope same set up exactly. Just a different target.

This leads me to think it is the alignment points but I have tried changing them and having a hundred or just a few. Nothing really fixes the problem.

It is a bit puzzling. I have attached a few images of the typical anomalies I see in the finished images when I use AutoStakkert on Lunar avi files.

My first impression is that the images you have posted look quite under exposed and very flat on my screen. If the histogram is bunched up to the left hand side (darks) you should increase the exposure to obtain a brighter image and then try it again in Autostakkert2!

I have not had any problems with AS!2 with images that fill the histogram and have sufficient contrast - I usually get between 2000 and 4000 alignment points.

Good luck!
