Greyed out P/Shop tabs.

Can anyone tell me why so many of the drop down tabs are greyed out,
and therefore unavailable. I used crop on one image imported from DSS,
and when I tried to use it on a subsequent image it was greyed out;
likewise with selective colour. I use PS 7.

Bit depth can be a factor, not all tools/filters work in 16 bit.
What about layers, perhaps a layer selection was making the tool unavailable?
Seems weird that the crop tool was greyed out though.

More than likely bit depth as mentioned. Change to 8 bit and more options are available. Also make sure that you actually have the image active/selected and not just a mask or layer. Very weird that crop didn't work but now that I think about it crop is generally selected as a tool and not in a drop down menu. The "crop" that you may be seeing in the menu is for if you make a selection around a certain part of the image you can then select "crop" and it will crop out anything not in that selection. That may be the issue. Do a selection and see if the "crop" is active.
