Hi-Speed USB.?

I plugged my video cam into the laptop to transfer the DVD recording to the hard drive (using USB) and it says There are no HI-SPEED USB host controllers installed on this computer. You must add a HI-SPEED USB host controller. The specs for the laptop say that the 3 USB ports are USB 2 which i thought were hi-speed. Do i need to install new drivers ? i just don't understand this stuff so much. The laptop is a NEC-M540 and the Video Camera is a Panasonic VDR-D150. Any pointers would be greatful..

Sorry Toetoe a bit off topic, I was thinking of getting this exact camera, after being a sony guy for some of the time I thought I would change names to see how we go. What do you think of the camera? How does it perform at night? I am interested as I do lightning videography and wanted something better than my analogue rubbish I have now. Obviously I would need to get USB2 ports for a start :P

Have you updated your windows XP using the microsoft update link....do that first if you have not already done so.

You laptop is pretty recent so it should have worked but some USB devices in your laptop are not always fully supported.

Do the update and see how you go.

I am almost as bad when it comes to understanding this stuff.
I believe that some computers need the relevant USB drivers to be installed from the CD that would have accompanied the motherboard/computer.

You should not have to update your computer if your running windows XP but saying this some have had to update to get things to works.

Windows XP already has the USB2 driver.

Try checking BIOS setup and see if USB2 is enabled in the BIOS settings it might not be set to USB2

I have the NEC VERSA M320 laptop running XP Home and all 4 USB ports are USB 2.0 and enabled, the only thing I can think of is the previous suggestion to have a look in the BIOS and make sure USB 2.0 is enabled.

My USB 2.0 was enabled from the day I got the laptop about 3 years ago.

One more thing I have heard if you have a USB1 devices plugged into a usb2 port all ports become usb1 :shrug: dont know if its true as I cant test it out. Is anything else plugged into the usb ports??

Thanks for the replys,
It seems to be "HI-SPEED" now after finding a driver and installing it. It now says "Enhanced Host Controller" in Device Manager which should mean it is USB 2.0 HI-SPEED. Why it wasn't in the first place still has me confused. I couldn't find it in the BIOS, Windows update did nothing so i searched around until i found a driver and away it went.
Andrew: i havn't played with the night mode as yet as i am still working it all out, but i can recomend the camera for ease of use and so far it is very user friendly.
