Advise on Purchasing PhotoShop ?

One track ive never been down, is purchasing Programs; am on carers pension. Also not great with deeper insight on puutas, though Im somewhat adequately able with Photoshop tools/processing etc !

My humble few photo processing progs only consist of ;
Freeware : RegiStax, DSS & StarStax
Others : Canon Software Disc's, Windows movie Maker & Photo Shop CS3.


Moving forward, I would like to purchase my own Adobe PhotoShop/Illustrator Suite and Preferably on a Disc, so if need to Re-Load/install due to unforeseen Puuta breakdowns etc, without time consuming download varieties, which I feel is also somewhat a hassle & un-reliable, on accasions !

1st place I thought to look was Harvey Normans, just for idea on prices. though these are äparently for Students & Teachers ? What's the go there, are they only for sale to Students & Teachers ? Are they Not for the general public ? Are they only a Training type programm, possibly missing some higher technical functions ? Or are they the Full version ? I dont know ! Any insight here would be most appreciated , , .

Prog 1. I take it that the 1st Prog is just PS6 ext, , cheap enough, huh, but is it genuinly a full specs photoshop prog, hense Student/Teacher Edition ?

Prog 2. 2nd Prog I assume is the same as the 1st, but with the Web design software, doubt ill need web design, so wont go there ?

Prog 3. 3rd prog has PS6, Web design & Illustator, bit expensive as paying for web design again, which I wont use !

Question 1 ) Whats with this "Student Teacher Edition" & are these Editions the Full Kit, I mean, in the case of the 1st prog, just CS6, does this have all the PS tools, add ons from web, etc working to there full potential ?

Question 2 ) I see all above are programmed to run on 64bit OS, so, will they also run on 32bit systems ? I'm on 32bit now, though hoping to upgrade to 64bit & i7 next year sometime ?

Question 3 ) If the full Kit, are these Prices reasonable ?

Question 4 ) Are there other reliable scorces of purchasing on the web for disc versions, and probably cheaper, as Harvey Normans is Hardley Normal on prices, considering sourcing the web these days ;)

I understand that Adobe have stopped selling “boxed” versions of CS with CS6 as the last version and now only rent the new CC Suite for an on-going, monthly rental amount.

When you purchase a boxed version or a bone fide CS6 (or previous version) you are purchasing a Licence to use the program on 2 computers and that’s it. Once you have made the one off payment and activated the product you can use CS6 and it will always work on your 2 PCs with no need to connect to the internet, validate the purchase or have any other arrangement with Adobe.

However, with CS6, Adobe will not enhance the program so newer model cameras and functions will not be available.

With the new “rent only” CC you basically are signing up with Adobe for the rest of your life to pay a monthly fee for the privilege to use their applications. I understand that after establishing a contract, your credit card is debited monthly ($10.00 for CC and LR5 on special until end Dec I think – check before you buy?).

With the new business model, you have to connect to Adobe via the internet every 90 days or the app ceases to work.

As soon as you end the agreement or stop making monthly payments, CC will no longer work. You will not be able to browse or open any of your CC related files at all – period.

Some people prefer the new business model with a relatively low but perpetual monthly free and the constant drip of updates and enhancements. Personally I don’t and will use CS6 until it dies and hope that something else comes on the market as a replacement.

In summary, CS6 is the last boxed version and is probably nigh on impossible to purchase whereas CC is the new beaut monthly rental version that stops working if you don’t connect every 90 days or if you stop your payments. There may be hefty exit fees too.

CC downloads and installs on your PC like any other app and runs locally – it only wants to ‘phone home every 90 days.

Bob, regarding the Student Teacher versions, you need a valid student ID from a school or university to activate. AFAIK the student teacher edition is full featured.

Hi Bob

The Student and Teacher Edition is (theoretically) only available to students and teachers or academic staff at an approved education institution and a valid ID is required to purchase this in store. If you get it online they can request a copy of your ID be sent to them so they can verify the legitimacy of your enrolment/employment. Increasingly they want a valid institutional email entered to email you the download link. This way they can confirm the validity of the purchase. The programs are however full featured and work just the same as the full priced edition.

Adobe have a special on at the moment for PS and Light Room for $10 a month until Dec 31 the link is (http://www.adobe.com/au/products/photoshopfamily.html). As Phil said the catch is they want your credit card number and will cut your access as soon as you don't pay.

I know the Coop Bookshop did have booked versions of Creative Suite available a few weeks ago and these were around $300 to $350.

Cheers much Dennis :thumbsup: oh no, not selling box editions any longer, crypeeze, that'd be right :rolleyes: I do have a good freind who is right into graphic art, signage, posters etc, a very equipped Mac guy who has the Adobe suite via monthly debit, tho I didnt know this was going to be the only way in the near future with Adobe. Thanx very much for your time on explaining this insight !
I think I need to find the last CS6 boxed edition, and fast, atleast then I may get several, if not more yrs out of it :thumbsup:

Thank you for this also Brian :thumbsup: and the additional insight with online legitimacy of ones enrolment/employment verification etc, I wasnt going to try that, honest ;) :rofl:

I would be very interested in knowing a contact for said coop bookstore if possible tho, are they in Aus, I dont do much with books : )
