I have always prepared drawings of all my projects in Autocad. in a dos copy from 1989 and later in Acadlite for windows.

I have a students disk of ACAD2000 that was a given to me years ago but never used.

As My copy of AClt for windows does not work on Windows 7 I thought I would try to install ACAD2000 on my Win 7 systems. Alas it does not install there either due to an incompatable installer. However I discovered (by googling) that you can install it in XP then transfer the acad2000 folder to win 7 or win 8.

This does not work straight away because it needs about 7 *.dll's not used in XP. However these files are easily found on the distribution disk and can be added and then the program works in Win 7

The new dwg file format can't be read in the ealier versions so don't get the files mixed else you will need to get another program to convert them back.

Barry, why not install an XP VM and run the DOS one there? There should be a version of "Virtual PC" to suit any Win7, and "XP Mode" for the higher end versions. Or VirtualBox. Unless "XP Mode" works you need a valid XP license and SP3.

I already have the latest version of VMware with a very large XP, Linux , windows 98-2e and DOS 7 installed including Autocad lite for windows. I have also run ACAD11 in the virtual DOS. That is why I need to keep the drawings separate as ACAD2000 loads the DOS dwgs but converts them to the ACAD14 version which does not work in ACAD11.
Note: I do have a program that will convert them back.

As I already had an Autocad2000 instalation disk that I have never used I thought I would like to have it run directly on Win 7 and Win 8. This was the way I was able to do it. Acad2000 is a 32 bit program . The problem is that the supplied setup stub is 16 bit and won't do the installation. You need a 32 bit installer for win 7. However if you already have an installed version in XP you can run that directly in Win 7.

On a clean installation you will get the error messages *.dll is missing. These are already on the distribution disk and you keep adding them 'til the program starts. I think it needs 7 restarts to get them all.
