So i bought a Bino-Viewer....

Hey everyone!

So the other day i finally bought a bino-viewer for my 10 inch Dob.

I got some eyepieces as doubles off one of the lovely members on here yesterday so i could use it, but when i got home to use it, it doesn't exactly work..!
Now i know it's not broken.. I know i just need some type of attachment. But as i am "reasonably" new to bino viewing i need some help off someone here to steer me in the direction of what i need to get?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So i have just done a little research myself and found i need a OCA? (corrector) Is this right? And if so where would i get one??

Yes you need an OCa or optical corrector/glass path compensator.
Newts are the worst when it comes to binoviewers which is unfortunate.
I would start by getting longer bolts for the mirror at the bottom of the tube to push up the mirror to help you a bit

What brand of binoviewer do you have.
William optics make 1.6x & 2.0 OCA
Siebert makes the most sizes, and ones especicially for newest (he's in US)
Baader make 1.25x(forgot it for newts) 1.7x 2.25x
tV make a 2.0x
You'll need a higher mag one unless you move the mirror up the tube (up to 5cm is good)-else get a Siebert one -Nb he is a one man business so makes the item when he gets an order, the stuff has a home made finish but his products I had aree of good quality.

In the meantime if you have a Barlow it might help you get close to focus-you can try it

I have no idea what brand it is as the person i bought it off had no box or anything and it has no markings but it looks exactly like this..

Also, no, i don't have a barlow yet as i am only just starting to get back into actual practical astronomy and am using what came with the scope.. Bar the eyepieces i have bought and the bino.

I see you can get a 1.9x OCA for as little as $10? What is the median price?

Burgess, Orion, Williams Optics all the same thing AFAIK. I would try a 2X barlow if you can get one easily on it and see if that works, which it should. A $10 OCS doesn't sound good to me. I have used my WO's with 1.6 OCS on an f5 8" Newt no problems with focusing. Andrews Communications sell the WO OCS's for $30 I think. Might be an idea to ring them and ask what you need, Luke is very helpful.

i have had trouble getting stuff from burgess - they seem ok but goods took foreveer & something was never sent out -

be careful with the WO 1.6x, you may still not be able to reach focus depending on youtube

Just thought to put my:) spoke in. Got my binoviewer:eyepop: through WO, (actually got two sets-one pair was better optically than the other. Sold on the one I didnt want). The big plus for me, was the quick delivery. Hit the buy button, and 4 days later, the items were in my hands, so super fast delivery,(A+):thumbsup: to Williams Optics.

Stick it in a barlow and the BV should work in your 10". A long barlow would be better than a shorty. And if you have/get a basic GSO 1.25" barlow (or similar), the achro lens assembly that unscrews from the bottom of the barrel is what BV sellers often call an OCA.

If you do get an OCA and still cannot reach focus, get an extension tube to go between your BV & OCA. This will boost the magnification and give you more room for reaching focus.

If you want to BV widefield / low power, that is just not going to work very well. Yes, it is doable, but it will not make use of the full aperture of the scope. It is a fundamental limitation on the geometry of this type of setup. In practical terms, your usable BV-ing FOV in a 10" Dob will be limited to what you get monoviewing with <20mm plossls.

Re astro dealers around Adelaide - give Matt from telescopes and astronomy a call. Do not be put off by the hideous website. Just talk to him and tell him what you're after. He's a straight up and cluey astro gear dealer in my limited experience. (If he's still in the biz. It's been a few years since I dealt with him.)
