Wireless USB

I want to fiddle around with an electronic compass chip which uses I2C and I have a usb to I2C device so I can fiddle with it while plugged into a pc but I'd like to finally run it remotely without the usb or any other cable.

Does anyone know how to wirelessly extend USB?

Build your own, Robin?: http://usbip.sourceforge.net/ ;) I have been meaning to try this on one of the devices we make at work (which have various combinations of USB, serial, Ethernet, WiFi and cellular interfaces).

There are quite a few off-the-shelf devices that claim to do this too although I have never tried any of them. Google for "USB over IP" and you'll find a bunch of them.

Cheers Logan, I'd want to plug a usb->serial into it, not sure if that would work plus it's a bit bigger than what I want.

Rick, that looks like a client/server driver setup between computers, I'm thinking a lot smaller, like 2 or 3 chips on a board, no remote PC

I found an RS232 to I2C driver chip which may be the way to go. A bluetooth modem could drive the RS232 away from the PC. I'll look into it.

I was thinking more of a small SoC based board for the remote, Robin. I can give you some suitable hardware if you have the embedded Linux chops :)

I'm sort of hoping I can use this as a slot azimuth sensor on the dome.
To get what I got now, more accurate the old fashion way, means wheels with holes, optical sensors to see the turning wheel, springs, screws, brackets and all that crap :(
