I have just spent an hour on my mobile (thankgod work pays my mobile bill) Speaking to Mike at Bintel trying to get cheaper prices across the board.......especialy on Televue products....most of our discussion was the difference in costs from buying overseas and yes I did give him comparisons.....my end result was unsuccesful but I have some intersting news on the Meade 5000 UW series.

Prices $

4.7mm
6.7mm
8.8mm
14mm
These are all the same price coming in at under $300AUD....I think thats a great price for a 14 mm Ultra wide considering their $199USD.....their actualy cheaper to buy in Australia....OMG...someone call the parametic.

Only problem...their on back order meaning....wait...wait...wait.....w ait...and wait a bit longer....I am also considering the 14 mm UW in the 4000 series.....but am tempted to wait......

I got Mike's(Bintel) permition to mention these costs.

What do you all think.......

I wouldnt fall for thinking newer must be better, especially with Meade.
Meade 3000 series plossls are much better than 4000 series apparently. The former made in Japan and the latter China as they were obviously cheaper.

They also used to sell some nice "super plossls" which were 5 element Japanese made. The 4000 series 'super plossls' are just Chinese plossls and nothing special.

Of the 6 Meade S/Ps I have at present, 3 were made in Japan.(bought '96/'01).The later aquisitions, 03 to present, were either made in China or Taiwan. They are still V/G E/Pcs. for the money.Crisp images to the edge on all, save the 32mm. But this is a basic flaw in the fast DOB optical system.
You call them *seagulls*, I call them striations. They disappear as you bump up the mag.

Something to think about, would like a 14mm uw 5000, or even a 32mm UW 5000. Got some vouchers that need cashing in. Hmmmm.

More of the Series 5000 Eyepieces are starting to trickle out. Thus far we have received samples of the Plossl in 9, 14, and 26mm. We are impressed with these eyepieces. The expanded field of view is readily apparent when comparing to standard Plossls of equal focal length. We expect to receive samples of several of the UltraWide series later this week, and will post some impressions when available.
