Bloody wind, somone should blow wind up (Ted Bullpit)

Out under a clear sky but geez the wind gusts keeps ruining my subs :tasdevil:
Now some diffuse high cloud is persisting...

Got a couple of ok ones but seriously need to get that dome up asap

....just needed to vent :scared:

It's been raining for 37 out of the past 50 days in Brisbane for 2013 (mostly cloudy the other days)... and still raining outside my window as I type this.

Sky...? What sky?!

strongmanmike
11-03-2013, 01:46 AM
Ah yes, no sky does make it hard ...but at least you don't get drawn into a false sense of security, setting up and then annoyed by the prevailing conditions resulting in poor data :bashcomp: :nerd:

I would have traded your gusty clear sky for our thunderstorm and heavy rain but went to bed instead.

Did you leave your money on the fridge????

Wind is frustrating. Many times my 12.5inch RCOS sat in the back of my car on trips to my dark site because of it.

FSQ is great that way as it sat below the walls and immune to wind.

How much a scope will be affected by wind is something I take into account for my dark site.

Does a dome stop that problem entirely or does it depend on wind direction? Althought at my dark site the wind is almost always from the same direction.

Greg.

Unless you're unlucky enough to be imaging directly into the wind - extremely rare I'd imagine - domes are THE remedy for wind! (except if you let one go with the dome slit shut ).

C'mon Mike, start that dome construction thread!!:windy:

I hear ya. Gully winds are a problem for me during Summer. The best times of the year to image are now and around October and November. Mind you, the RC8 copes well in the breeze.

It can be a real nuisance yeah, especially in an open field. When I did comet lovejoy from the top of a hill last year my tripod blew over a couple of time. Gave me the s||ts after a while. The view was great but bloody hell. You couldn't stand up straight.

strongmanmike
11-03-2013, 06:37 PM
...I wouldn't dare let one go in my Observatory if it were shut...although might kill the huntsmen spiders ...actually, had a big one on the mount last night, creepy buggers, had to brush it off before it crawled into the OTA :eyepop:

Greg, when I was imaging with my LX200 12" GPS under my former Sirius dome I could image in a gale at 2000mm Fl...it will be my remedy, I just need to get going on the project

Yeh great views from here too but although it was quite still the first two imaging sessions here back in Oct, every one since has been plagued by wind for some period ...I imagine it will settle down through winter though...then it will be -6C :eyepop: so the dome will be even more necessary, to prevent dew and ice forming on everything :cold:

 Ah, good'ol politically incorrect Kingswood Country, ground breaking TV

Thanks guys, I got some surprisingly ok results out of the crap night in the end (magic of processing) ...but it looks like it will be a much better night here tonight :prey::prey::prey::prey: so I might try again, at least for the detail grabbing Lum (work tomorrow). When the conditions are good this AG12 OTA is a killer

Wind is a killer where I live, dosen't help that it is one of the windiest places on the planet!

Cant bulid a obs as the light pollution is bad and I rent so I habe been thinking about construction a portable frame and shadecloth contraption to combat the evil wind. Anyone else done something similar?

LewisM
12-03-2013, 09:09 PM
Exactly. I make windbreaks out of a clothes rack and a heavy wool blanket, and I have nil wind issues (and it blows RIGHT across my driveway :))

Surely you could make some windbreaks Mike? Even some 4X2 posts with some corrugated iron between the posts.

Or, you could stand near your setup. You seem like a natural windbreak ;):P:D Like me - brick ****-house :)

strongmanmike
12-03-2013, 09:43 PM
Oh you are absolutely right Lewis, I have been putting off erecting wind breaks (already have a lot to set up and pull down each session anyway) because I have a 2.3m Sirius Dome kit sitting in my shed waiting to be erected, I needed approval form the land lord which I have received now and then I have been waiting for the cash to build the pier, footing and slab.

Attached is what it should look like - that's my backyard with the dome superimposed in order to show the land lords what I was planning.

This should be my wind remedy :)

I mean, you can't be serious....

Late this afternoon, it's beautiful and clear, weather reports good for clear all night too and (touch wood) there is hardly a breath of wind, great!!! I will redo my Lum from Sunday night yipee!..

Setup the scope ready to image...aaaand they start  strong NW gusting breezes ...ruining even a 30sec sub, I mean fair-dink-um!!! :scared: been waiting for them to die down but 10:15pm now and I can (still) hear the wind outside....

I think I'll go eat worms...and work on my dome plans

what about parking the car near the mount to reduce the wind - even put the tailgate up near the mount?
