Too many things to do, core blimey.

I got a hold of some conveyor belt rollers the big one. For the sheer hell of it I attacked it with a cutting disc. Blimey what a tough bugger.

Behold the centre section which I was intend to scrap looks like a beautiful solid steel rod perfect for a super heavy duty part for an EQ mount I was also considering to build.

Well "fair suck of the Savlon" I am going to be busy for the rest of my life.

Enjoy and I will keep things posted.

Nice score Malcolm!
What is the OD of those rollers?

BTW, you may have noticed I no longer work at Jaycar

Hi Simon,

I knew sometime ago that you finished, not sure why but have an idea based on other staff mumblings.

The pipes are 170mm outside diameter and the tube is 6mm thick. The centre shaft is 36mm diameter but has a small amount of rust on them so I expect they need turning down to remove rust.

I have some smaller rollers but believe the shafts are super thick. I can lift the long roller on my own but the smaller roller I cannot lift well at all.

Thanks for the question as I needed to get that information. The next step is a 6 to 10mm plate for the base. I will get that at the same time I get other metal including a welding bench-top.

Wow, they are larger than I had thought. Perfect for a pier, well done. Looking forward to watching this project progress.
Do you think the smaller rollers may be solid?

As for Jaycar, there were quite a few small reasons for my departure, the introduction of Sunday trading was the single largest contributing factor, the stingy pay packet was another. Otherwise I really did enjoy the position, probably one of the most enjoyable job's I've ever had. Meeting interesting people all day and being able to help them find a solution to a problem was quite rewarding. Oh well, onwards and upwards.
I'm now doing engineering work, mostly instrumentation in explosive atmospheres for a Norwegian company in the Oil & Gas industry, reasonably interesting and decent money, but not something I want to be doing for the rest of my life.

Well done Malcolm I work in the coal mining industry (Chpp and coal loader )for thirty years and never though of use a convey return roll for a pier .
At the coal loader we had a 1.8 m belt the return would be ideal for a pier

Cheers Ian,

Took a while in selecting the right stuff but they felt great for the job. Unfortunately ran out of money big time so i have had to concentrate on other things including selling non astro related products to get some finances.

Happens occasionally but hope to get back into the project again soon.

Been a long time but a small advance in the creation of my pier. Again i have more pier cylinders available but cannot proceed as my drop-saw died and I need it to make the cuts.

Anyway the first welding job is done and I got the pier Sandblasted and powder coated. Personally the cost of this has increased a lot so I will try other powdercoaters in the future to see if I was ripped off or not.

Any image is the completed pier located against the rental observatory. I expect this thread will not continue and will be transferred to the rental observatory thread unless I create more piers in the future.

The next stage will be an attachment for the EQ5 mount and mounting it on the concrete block.

Continuation of this build will be on the following thread - http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=109479&highlight=pier
