Of course all these net based speed tests are relative to the server you're downloading from and the hops to get there, if you want to monitor your true network speed for what you're actually downloading/uploading get something like, for windows, "Cool beans system info" (although I'm sure there are many more, and probably better) that will show you your real-time data rates over your network interface.
As with most things in life, a little raw data can make things a bit clearer :D

ADSL is asymmetric by design in all cases not in "almost all cases".
SDSL or Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line technology provides the same amount of bandwidth downstream as upstream.

Wow! I always thought it was "asynchronous", I swear I've seen it that way many times. Makes much more sense as "asymmetric" ,good to be corrected, thanks! :D

My Japanese MiL has a FTTH connection and it's shockingly fast. It makes me want to weep when I come home to good ol' Telecom NZ after using a real telecommunications service for a while.

Not only is the connection insanely fast, but her account is uncapped, and she pays much less per month than I do for my tin-cans-and-string ADSL joke.

Sure, there's the population density aspect, but even so...

There is only one way to test upload and download speeds. Use a timer to check the time taken and divide the file size by this. It will surprise you what your true speed is.

I used to get complaints on Unwired about download speeds. I gave them a test procedure that involved down loading a file direct from the ISP and the time it should take for their design speed. In 9/10 times the slowdown was not from the ISP but general congestion on the internet.

My uploads are to my web server. The maximum speed I can expect is 100KB/s. It usually times at between this and about 33KB/s.

Latency is a different problem and will depend on the time delay though a connection not its speed.
