I am hoping to do a 'LIVE' Astro broadcast from the Snake Valley Camp in 3 weeks time, but the best speeds I have heard of for remote uploads is around 22kbps!

I will need around 400-500kbps (more would be nice).

Is this possible remotely?
What is the fastest I can seriously hope for?

From the SV camp we get Full Bars on Telstra's NextG network.

Thanks for any info

I get about 1000Kb/s (100KB/s) with my ADSL2 to my remote server from home. I also get the same download speeds from the server. We both have the same upload restrictions. I have also occasionally had this much on my Bigpond next G service from Wiruna (ASNSW site) but it is more often closer to 20KB/s. (Medium strength signal). Depends on the amount of traffic.

Incidently we did a live Skype run to the Texas Star party in USA from the SPSP this year with Mike carrying my laptop and webcam around the site and doing "interviews". It worked great.

Thanks Barry.

Looks like I'll just have to try it and see.
I'll have to use Telstra as The others don't give coverage out here.

Gee we have fantastic broadband and wireless internet in Oz

Ken, as far as I can see with Telstra Bigpond Wireless:-

http://go.bigpond.com/wireless/

you cannot get to choose download/upload speed - you get whatever you can get wherever you are. The only choice is monthly download limit. (Unless we get that "Ultimate" option for, ahem, some $2,400 over 24 mths! Maybe that is faster??)

Didn't we test my Bigpond wireless last time I was at the club site? If so, I think that is the best we would get at camp for a regular Bigpond device.

I asked the Telstra Website:-

=================================== =======
The following broadband option(s) may be available for:
SnakeValley VIC

(https://my.bigpond.com/check-availability/default.do)Mobile Broadband - At this location typical customer download speeds from 550kbps to 8Mbps¹, with a BigPond Elite™ device are not available.

However, at this location, typical customer download speeds from 550kbps to 3Mbps² may be available with a 7.2 or BigPond Elite™ device.²
View the Wireless service map (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:%20void%280%29) to confirm a specific location access to Next G™ coverage. Note that the service map does not show the typical customer download speeds available. To confirm the typical speeds available in any further locations, please check here (https://my.bigpond.com/check-availability/default.do)
=================================== ==============

Of course, they don't think we are interested in upload speeds, only download!

Thanks Eric.
I been checking all that.
It appears that there are 2 seperate Telstra entities serving out Wireless.

Telstra Wireless, and Bigpond Wireless. 2 different systems both through the same system :screwy:

- Bigpond Wireless only does 24 month contracts.

- Telstra Wireless does Pre-paid but as far as I can see you need a BSB number :confused2:

I'm looking into it further.

Yes Eric, you did try your dongle here at the clubsite, but it may be different through my little netbook and at the Camp site.

Ken

Chances are that the Bigpond one is for retail customers - ie mums & dads @ home - whilst Telstra does the corporates, businesses etc - if you must choose, then choose Telstra rather than Bigpond as first choice IMO

HTH

No Bert, no 3G out here.

Only NextG

Yes, it seems that way Bill.
Strange that mums, dads etc with Bigpond can't get Pe-paid!

Have to go Telstra.
