They are talking about Aurora Australis while it happens in New Zealand and not Australia ?
Should it not be called Aurora Aotearensis ?
Anyway, the pictures are really awesome. Looks like a big dance party with light and lasershows and colored LEDs.

Well, Australis just means 'southern'. Hence why we were Terra Australis Incognito or Unknown Southern Land before settlement. :)

Suggest you find another place to put the pics...

Or for planning your eclipse expedition :P Says eclipse chaser to local Kiwi bro: What do you mean the eclups won't hippen for another 2 years??? According to CNN...oh nevermind

Yep, and the auroras visible to the OP aren't called Aurora Hollandaisis for the same reason :D

Indeed, Australia was once called New Holland, but for New Zealand it maybe Aurora Zealandensis .....

Seeing it's on CNN, it's likely fake like everything else there (seriously, why anyone with a neuron reads CNN?)

To be fair, they got the rest reasonably accurate

The article was written up by Ian Griffin Director of the Otago Museum. He flew in SOFIA during their flights last week. He took some of the pics they used. He is a very keen and dedicated Aurora hunter.
