What else can I shoot with just a standard tripod?

Obviously I'm not expecting too much here, but I've stacked a number of 5 second subs (yes, I know - Any more and I get trails) at 300mm with my Pentax K-x DSLR which resulted in an image of Eta Carinae which I thought turned out reasonable, all things considering.

I'm looking for other targets that are fairly easy to photograph (as Eta Carinae is). Prefer nebula as they look so amazing, but I'm happy to have a go at anything.

Again, not expecting much out of my substandard setup. For what it's worth, I'm saving for a HEQ5 Pro

Any ideas?

Greg,

try the lagoon or trifid at the moment and when orion comes around again that'll give you some great results.

the jewel box cluster is a nice tight cluster with good star colour

Hi Greg. The LMC is a real gem. I'm not sure if it will fit into the FOV @ 300mm but surely worth a try.

LMC seems to be a bit low in the sky at the moment so I don't think I'll have much success with that one.

If you have a wider lens, maybe 90mm or 50mm, you can get some very nice images of the Antares region. Lot's of dust and colour to be had even with short subs.

As JJJ suggested the lens you are using is a bit long for un-tracked images. you may not have one but a 50mm is perfect for some very interesting wide fields.

Yes go for the wide field stuff and may be try a time lapse or two
