2016 census. One step closer to the police state
This time around, they are going to keep our personal identity information with the standard B.S. about it all being encrypted and therefore our data will be secure. What a load of crapppp! Phone them up and you get the, "We are having a higher level of contact than usual message".... I can only wonder why...
I'd say the national security agency is behind it
Damn them to hell. I wont be doing it and to hell with the fine.

Heard something on this last week, when a census rep came on the ABC radio and tried to explain how "secure" it all was, and how they werent going to keep the names with the data, hence it couldnt be hacked.
( Coffee came out of my nostrils at that point, as an earlier news report had just finished detailing how the "allegedly" Ruskies got all the Democrats email data )
What concerns me is they are simply going to send out letters addressed "To the resident", with a 12 digit code inside.
ie they dont know who gets what code???????????????
You supposedly use this code to set up an account with password and then do the census, including your name and address.
( Old census had this data on the envelope the census was put in, not part of the census itself )
Sooooooooooo,
a) Whats to stop people just logging in via a VPN and trying any old set of nos till they get one?
b) Whats to stop me stealing someone elses letter and filling it out however i like ????
( Amazing how the annoying neighbour could become a "person of interest" )
ie The old census was actually picked up and signed off at the door, so they knew what addresses had or had not complied.
This new mechanism is just set up to be hacked.

Storm in a teacup. There's enough post on these forums and other places for anyone to profile you. Privacy online is an illusion. You can kick and scream all you want doesn't change the fact. Move with the flow.

The ABS doesn’t have the authority to collect ‘name’ in the 2016 Census on a compulsory basis.

I for one couldn't care less who knows that there are 4 people living in my house, and that we are all atheists from a Caucasian background. (You could probably work that out by nothing more sinister than walking past our front gate once or twice a week.) Hack away at my Census data to your heart's content!

Since the Stuxnet incident, most any industry that use distributed control systems employs the protocol of absolute separation between the DCS and the internet... And that includes a prohibition of thumb drives and internet being used (also) with the DCS.
It's the only firewall that is hack proof.

fwiw) About 10 years ago, I talked to a young lady who was employed in some peripheral way with project echelon.
Basically... the issue is not whether your privacy can be violated, it's a matter of sifting through the mountain of data in order to identify potential 'persons of interest'.
The only way to avoid the eye of Sauron is to live like a Quaker.... but that would also make you a person of interest

Data mining is done my machines nowadays so not an issue at all.
People are actually very careless about what they say or post online. Ironically the OP is making a big thing out of privacy violation in a public forum.
Off the grid is not an option really unless you want to live in a cave as you've pointed out.

With the letter they send, you let them know you want a hard copy and they will send you one to fill in. That's what I will be doing.

I suggest not writing down your census civil disobedience intentions here as someone maybe monitoring you already.
