Orion

This is an incomplete version of the entire constellation of Orion. I have gone a bit hard with the Ha data, which I will dial back somewhat for the final version. There is some non-Ha dark and reflection nebualae that has been misrepresentated and underdone. But here goes Be careful - it could burn out the red cones in your retina :/

Details:
Canon 6D (full spectrum modded), Astronomic 'L' XL clip in filter, Zeiss 135mm f2.0 APO, AstroTrac.
ISO3200, f2.5 with shutter speeds 4x3s, 4x8s, 4x30s and 8x90s for each panel aligned using PT Gui for each sub in a panel, then again to align panels for overall mosaic.
Ha data is as above except using Astronomic 12nm Ha XL clip in filter with 12x210s exposures (stacked using Deep Sky Stacker)

Wowza!

It looks fantastic I don't mind at all that you've been heavy handed with the Ha data

A fantastic image Troy but to me not as good as your Rho image which was mind bogglingly good. Got a bit of salmony Ha colours going so the Ha areas are a bit off colourwise. The blue halos around the bright stars whilst they show which stars are very bright look a bit like you took the image on a cloudy night. Perhaps they could be tamed. Its hard but can be done.

Overall a bit too pinkish and blue which I think can be made to be made to be more accurately a wider range of colours. Orion dust clouds are often shown as brown. Just my opinion. Of course if I had done this image I would be ecstatic!

Greg.

Thanks for the kind words Tim, Geoff, Nikolas, Rick, Greg, Mike and h0ughy!
Greg, thank you for a straight up critique. I added DSLR acquired Ha data separate to my normal work flow - need to work on that one. I also have separate Ha for Rho/Zeta Ophiuchus that I haven't applied yet, so good to get feedback.
Oh, the salmon dance! - Is it true that hydrogen beta (cyan) exists at a proportion 1:3 to most hydrogen alpha emissions for most nebulae? That's why Hb filters are rarely used. From that, would it would make sense that Ha emission nebulae are not pure red? - more pastel pink. It is something that I have shifted from bold red - but not sure where it should sit. I do agree that it isn't quite right.
There is a load of brown nebulae (from the loop to the blob esp) and even the witches' head is a bit slack in this mosaic. Have the data there, just need to stretch it more and dial back the Ha a bit (actually clipping some parts of the Barnard's loop :/). A slide with the magenta/green colour balancemay help.
I was really lucky with the stars - a thin veil of cirro-stratus cloud rolled through and hung around, so too advantage of that - like a fog filter, but smoother!

The colour you present your Ha is somewhat subjective. Personally only I like the hues that Marco gets with his. He did a post where he outlines his processing routine for Ha. If you do a search of posts it should come up.

He gets a pleasant crimson colour. I agree all red is ugly and bright pinkis the actual colour of Ha.

Greg.

Thank you rmuhlack, Roband, Shiraz and Greg! Thanks for the heads up Greg - wow, Marco has some stunning work! I will take that on board - thanks again. I will dial back the Ha (pull it down for a more burgundy colour) and bring up more of the dusty brown stuff and bring up the white reflection nebulae for the next crack. I have some more data that I actually forgot about too that I'll add. Appreciate the constructive critique. Looking forward to seeing more of your work - the one you did for the horse head with the striated curtain was stunning!
Mike - Loved that version of the lagoon not so long back with the sexy blue skirt! I'll have a close look at the Ha elements in that for colour.
