I use a vpn through PIA and it's pretty good. Depends on the exit point, the US ones seem fine and I can stream NetFlix in HD fine, the UK ones are pretty patchy though. Haven't tried any of the others.

I use NordVPN and when connected to Canadian exit nodes I've been able to reach speeds of 960 K/s.

I'm using mine on my Raspberry Pi.

Thanks guys. Tom, you have huge speeds, I am lucky to get 800kb/sec. I gather you are on NBN to get those sort of speeds!!
I am currently trialing IPvanish, they have 6 Australian servers all pinging around 38-50ms. Depends on the time of day as to what sort of speeds I am getting. Currently 1.30pm here and getting around 750kb/s downloading.

I'm curious about VPN services such as PIA and others. I can see why someone doing serious downloading of music and videos might want to anonymise their movements (particularly in light of the recent NetFlicks rulings). Otherwise though, I'm not yet seeing the need when internet usage is as boring and prosaic as mine - emails, a bit of news, a bit of IIS, some banking, ebay and so forth.

Anyone?

Peter

Peter,

The main reason, apart from privacy, is so that you can spoof your location and access services otherwise blocked to us poor Aussies.

Cheers,
Rick.

Peter,

I was going to go with IPVanish, as well; they claim to have the fastest servers. However, NordVPN had a 70% sale on and I signed up for six months. A lot of my colleagues are PIA users; I might switch over. But, for now, I'm quite happy.

Yes indeed. I did campaign hard for FTTH for everyone else too. It's unfortunate that this plan for Australia's future has been delayed.

So this means that VPN is terrible or are the links the wrong way around?

A VPN is going to give you slower speeds than your connection when you are running at that speed, because you will be limited at their end.

Up until now I have been going with the servers with the fastest ping, and obviously they have been in Australia. Just tried eastern USA, New York in particular, pretty slow ping, about 250ms but download speed is what I am getting through my native ISP. That is a bonus. On the Aussie servers, getting about 75% of native ISP speed!!

I am with hide.me .
You can sign up for free and test their speed for your connection.
2GB per 30 days are free, after 30 days your account is locked for 1 day and then you can continue using it.
Or you buy a subscription.

Or vice versa in my case . However I have had to give up. While I can get acceptable speeds into Europe or North America, Australia is a "bridge (router?) too far". I cannot get enough speed to effectively use ABC iView, sadly.

I'm using NordVPN as well.
Very impressed with the customer support.
I put up with the slower speeds that you are always
going to get with a VPN as I value my privacy.
