[AstroFest] SMC

Trawling through my data, so I'll keep 'em coming thick and fast

At a tad under 30 degrees altitude at the time these subs were taken, the SMC would have been easily out of the muck, as Brisvegas' spillage didn't seem to go that far over.

Anyhow, this is 10x 4 minutes with the ZS71 on the EQ6 with my Canon 1100D at ISO1600 (plus darks/biases). I'll have another bash at it from down here in a few months when it's a bit higher up, and will centre it in the frame better

I'd expected a little more blue, but it's more like dirty snow just a mass of stars, with quite a variety of colours. Then there's the green nebulae, with NGC 346 the most prominent (including its sweeping wave), along with it's companion on the lower left of the shot, with the fainter NGC 249 and 261 to the right and above of centre. Also looks like a few faint globs are in there too, but I need to look into astrometry and dig a little deeper

That's pretty nice! I took an SMC set from Coonabarabran last week, and I have come to realise how tough an object it is to image - the galaxy seems very flat on the colours and with few distinct edges. But you've got a lot of the faint fuzzies floating about it, so try IISer Patrick's detailed SMC observing charts for identifying some of them.
