Jen jen,
Download a program called Virtual Dub.
Now load your avi. file into it.
Now in the file menu, click on "Save Old Format Avi"
It should now be converted into a file readable by Registax.

I had similar issues, I must have 20 different file converters clogging up my hard drive and none of them work.

I have had success with using Backyard EOS 'Planetary' feature to record the avi's. I don't know what it does but it's specifically designed to upload straight into Registax, and it works

same thing happened to me Jen. I was getting "wrong codec" or some biz and gave up on the AVI.
What i did do to counteract it, (as suggested by our JJJ ) was to make an image sequence of the AVI movie, and stack those images. It might be a tad more work but at least i got a result.
I used VideoPad Video Editor to create the image sequence, then AVISTACK 2 to stack the images with varying results.
From my experience, Registax v 5.1 was better to do the Wavelet sharpening with. V6 keeps crashing

Jen,

I Jen-erally (hee hee... attempted pun) agree with Steve there... Virtual Dub does well at conversion... and Registax 6 does seem to crash a bit.

I have been using AVIStack like him, and at first the wavelet processing didnt seem to work as well as Registax 6. But after working on it for ages, and getting used to the differences, I think the wavelets work just as well in either.

But Jen, it's far easier to capture the AVI's rather than convert from MOV's. I use BackyardEOS for this, but there are plenty of options. Does require your camera to be hooked up to a laptop however... so if you want to just record into the camera, then you need to keep recording MOV's and convert them with VirtualDub.

Geoff.

I had similar issue in the past, and I managed to fix it by using Prism.exe
to convert into avi (same extension, but not quite the same format). It is free for the first month of use...

Try Autostakkert.

http://www.autostakkert.com/wp/download/

You first have to castrate (make B/W movies from color AVIs) with Castrator (included) and then use Autostakkert.

But Registax should support AVI.

That is because I use a commercial avi encoder in BackyardEOS, had to many issues with the free encoders.

I also test with most popular stacking software to ensure the load and stack just fine before every major releases.

Thank you for choosing BackyardEOS = BYEOS = BYE

It stands for Audio Video Interleave and is a common video file format. But as Jen has found out not all AVIs are the same AVIs, there are actually lots of different ways of saving the video stream within that format. Complicated? YES!! I gave myself several headaches trying to understand while writing the video occultation manual for the RASNZ Occ. Section. Unless you really like the tech stuff you might be wandering into dangerous territory there...

On the other hand, VDub is a great bit of freeware! I hope that works for you, Jen.

Ahhh, the dreaded codec problems!

So, here's how it works. Your camera records video in the .MOV format. When you convert this to an AVI format, what you are really doing is changing the format (or "container"), but not the underlying codec (in this case H264).

To put it another way, AVI is a container for video files, which can be recorded using various codecs, eg Mpeg1, Mpeg2, H263, H264 and others.

So when you convert from .MOV to .AVI you need to ensure that you are actually re-encoding (also called transcoding) the file using one of the codecs that Registax understands - which if I remember correctly is Mpeg1 or (preferably) Mpeg2. Registax doesn't support the H264 codec, whic is a pity 'cos H264 is a much newer and better codec. But I digress..

I do believe from memory virtual dub will transcode to Mpeg2. Alternatively I think Windows Live Moofie Maker will also do something similar (in that it's called convert to AVI type I).

You can also use many commercialy available video editing programs, like Ulead DVD maker etc.

Hopefully the above has made things clearer, but any questions feel free to ask.

I've just re-read you post Jen and realised that it's VirtualDub that is spitting the dummy and giving you grief. It sounds like VirtualDub isn't able to decode the file because you don't have the H264 codec installed on your system.

There are various ways to get it on your system, and once it's installed it'll stay there and make VirtualDub play nice.

If your computer has a BluRay drive, install the BluRay playback software that came with it (BluRay movies are usually encoded using the H264 codec).

Alternatively download and install a codec pack (use Google to find one). From memory K-Lite Codec Pack used to work well.

Finally, do a Google search for an answer to your problem - there's heaps of posts over at Doom9 and places like that. A little more perseverance and you'll crack it Jen!

I had this problem, use Zoom Browser Ex (or whatever it is called) it comes with Canon cameras. So you probably already have it.

Click on the file and go to the tab and choose 'export file as avi' (i think -i haven't been imaging for months, ) but you will be able to sort it out.

The avi file is compatible with Registax.
