Jupiter and Venus Conjunction at Geikie Gorge

Jupiter and Venus Conjunction at Geikie Gorge, from early July.

On Day 5 of our Kimberley adventure, we woke up at 3:30am to head on a short cruise down Fitzroy River. We disembarked and climbed up (in the dark) one of the escarpments of Geikie Gorge.

We finally reached the top and overlooking the West wall, waited for sunrise to light up the wall.

While travelling down the river the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter was stunning. Once we reached the top of the escarpment, while everyone was facing West, I turned around and faced East to capture the bright planet pairing.

Jupiter is the top of the two bright stars, with Venus below. Aldeberan is the star below that, and the Pleaides star cluster is visible top right.

Beautiful colours, Mike! I agree with David, this definitely needs a link to a higher res / lower compression photo for us to enjoy in all its glory

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback.

Here's a large version:

I added the diffraction spikes in Photoshop, obviously. I tried it for an experiment and didn't mind the effect for Jupiter and Venus

Quite like the effect as well!

Have read somewhere that placing a couple of hairs across the lens will do the same thing......
