16” Dobsonian Telescope

16” Dobsonian Telescope

This scope was hand built by me around 2008 over a 4 month period. The scopes planning and design is based on a book by David Kriege and Richard Berry The Dobsonian Telescope - A Practical Manual for Building Large Aperture Telescopes. I am including this book with the sale of this telescope so who ever buys it will have a copy and perhaps by reading it will understand the fundamental principals that went into the build of the scope as well as further possible upgrades for example servo-cat. I also had help from Peter Read from SDM who was a great sounding board and kindly answered my questions. In fact some of the scope components were sourced from SDM…. The alloy latitude bearings, parts for the 18 point mirror cell, and some wiring components to name a few.

The wood construction is made to spec from A grade plywood with all the pieces cut via a joinery shop in Lismore, NSW for accuracy. The finished construction was sealed with 5 coatings of Cabot's Gloss Exterior Clear Timber Finish. The mirror was brought directly from GSO and has since been beautifully recoated by a chap who was working out of a shop near Bankstown Airport. I forget his name but he did a fantastic job and a marked improvement in performance. I was put on to him by a mirror maker Mark in Sydney who happens to be a member of this group. The whole system is powered via a separate power pack (not supplied) that can deliver 12v and plugs in via one of the feet in the base plate. The scope has a counter weight so you can have a range of eyepiece weights ie: Nagle 30mm to a University HD Or-9mm

16” GSO Mirror (recoated), has the original freight box for secure long distance travel.
18 point floatation mirror cell with cooling fan and power control panel.
Altitude and Azimuth bearing are Ebony Star laminate riding on Teflon pads.
Galaxy Optics secondary with dew heater
Thousand Oak dew heater system (Telrad and eyepiece)
Telrad spotting scope
Argo Navis digital setting circles 10,000 step encoders
Feather Touch focuser FTF2020BCR
Celestron Collimating Eyepiece 1.25
Illuminated Eyepiece for calibration of Argo Navis.
Covers and carry cases and a rain coat as per photos
Removable wheelbarrow handles for easy movement (shed to yard)
Data cable (Keyspan) to update the firmware on the Argo Navis also allows you to upload observing lists to the Argo Navis.
Book: The Dobsonian Telescope - A Practical Manual for Building Large Aperture Telescopes by David Kriege and Richard Berry.
There is also some spare truss pole clamps that seat the truss poles if in the case they need to be replaced in the future.
