SBIG new range of STX CCD’s

I see from the local ATS website that SBIG will be introducing a new range of CCD’s with some quite interesting features, the STX series (pdf on ATS site). I had a look at the US SBIG website but couldn’t see the announcement or any prices.

Also, was there some talk of SBIG bringing out a new, sub $1,000 (US) stand alone auto guider some time ago?

Cheers

Dennis

Will we also get new SBIG pricing or the same old pricing, i.e 6,000 to 10,000 AUD for a camera?

Hi Paul (Ponders)

Rest easy – it’ll be a while before the coffers are sufficiently full again to afford something of this magnitude.

Cheers

Hi Paul (Zuts)

Well, I for one am hoping that the price/performance will improve and these should be a more affordable range for us Aussies!

While the the new STX cameras will not be cheap, the have a range of features that will be very hard to beat eg.

50 degree delta T
USB and Ethernet
fast download
multiple guiding modes
Argon purged chambers
multiple chip options

SBIG have given no indication of pricing, but I would expect it to be in the STL range...and higher for the big back-illuminated chips.

Interestingly this is the first time SBIG have gone for (Marconi) back-illuminated chips. With +94% QE + self guide and adaptive optics I'd expect these babies to be real photon magnets.

The new, stand alone guider I would not expect until the 2nd half of '08...but I expect to get up to Santa Barbara in the next couple of months and will find out first hand what the current state of play is.

Thanks for the updates Peter. Based on the pedigree of the ST4 and STV, the new stand alone auto guider is the baby I am keenly anticipating.

Cheers

Just as an aside the Herald-Sun ran a piece on Astro gear in general a couple of weeks back. The article can be viewed here....

Peter,

The Kodak KAF-9000 based camera looks very interesting with high QE and anti-blooming control. I reckon we will see new standards set with widefield astrophotography with that sensor .
