Sounds pretty cool H, when I win the lotto, I expect I will be having a big spend up, still waiting though.

Yep the specs are looking good, 19 cross AF!

I love my current 7D though, and probably wouldn't get the new one, rather a FF to complement the existing 7D.

The rumoured replacement for the 100-400 zoom is sounding good, but what I'm really waiting for is the replacement for the 400 f/5.6, which if it follows recent trends, will be lighter than the previous one, and have IS.

Cheers,
Jason.

No idea on price, sorry, Chris.

Also, I don't think if it will have an articulating screen; they would have advertised it in the specs, as it's a pretty unique inclusion (or selling point for a lot of people).

Jason, there's a bunch of new lenses coming. I was going through OPI patent applications at work the other day -- there's an application by Canon (amongst several) for a 14-24mm f/2.8L lens. I'm hoping it comes to fruition.

Thanks H

Some useful information there, and these new lenses sound very good.

Sounds great, it's the noise levels I will take most not of though, have to wait for release to see that.

Very Meh if you ask me. Minor increase in pixel count, and faster frame rate. I guess the builtin GPS and WiFi is handy. The existing 7D already has 19 AF cross points.

So far Canons on chip phase detect has been extremely underwhelming, compared to something like the Nikon 1 series.

Yebbut that's still half the price of the 400 f/4 DO, so still good value.

Cheers,
Jason.

I'd be very nervous if there was a quantum leap in pixel count, the 7d sensor is noisy enough as it is, 21mp is more than enough for any purpose IMO.

noise wise, I would expect it to be in the same ballpark as the new Nikon 7100 - that is 24mp.

Canon's phase detect being underwhelming? The AF module in the 5D Mark III and 1D X is class leading!

These cameras can focus at f/2.8 at ISO-12,800. Not just focus, but track, too.

I've tried myself and was blown away.

Hrm, in what way is it underwhelming? I must admit, I never use AF in LiveView.

A Canon 14-24 is likely to be very good as Canon no doubt will want to raise the bar on the superb Nikon 14-24 like they did with the 24-70 L 11. The Fuji 14mm F2.8 seems to be as good as the Nikon 14-24, no distortion and sharp in the corners. But thats an APS sized lens.

H, I have read several times AF in Live View can be more accurate than normal contrast detect AF. PDAF is slower but more accurate. A number of cameras using the Sony Exmor 16.3mp latest chip has this feature and that is the consensus on Sony's PDAF. Some landscape imagers only us Live View to focus because of this.

Even 21mp in an APS sensor may be pushing it if Canon is still using its existing chip architecture. They will probably rely heavily on Digic 5 processor to do noise reduction.

With my landscape work, I manually focus in LiveView with ExposureSimulation enabled and zoomed in 10x, bearing hyperfocal distance focusing in mind.

Too easy!

Yes I generally do the same.

Speed wise, its very poor compared to other 'in sensor' phase detect systems.

Normally phase detect AF (which is what has always been used with AF SLRS) is done by separate sensors - Nikon where the first to offer Phase detect built into the imaging sensor, in the 1 series cameras. Its SUPER SUPER quick. Its tracking is outstanding, which is not normally something you get with mirrorless cameras.

There was a lot of hype around Canon offering this sort of tech in the 650D, and EOS-M cameras, but its been universally panned really.

Edit: I just checked Wikipedia - looks like Fuji where the first to offer PDAF built into the sensor!

Greg - you have it the wrong way around Contrast Detect AF is what has been traditionally used in Compacts and mirrorless cameras, and is usually seen as slower, but more accurate, since it is using the sensor data itself to calculate focus. Phase detect is the sort of High speed AF that we are used to in SLRs and DSLRs, but relies on a separate AF array.
