500px - photography site

I've noticed the increasing popularity of 500px - plenty of very good photographers there.

I've also seen a few IIS members post their stuff there.

Is it worth creating an account and posting my stuff there? I guess it's another photographers hangout/community, and another place to showcase your work and increase your profile?

Years ago I used to post my images to many different photography forums but it became very tiring and I have limited time to hang out on forums, so nowadays I just post it on IIS, FB and G+.

Just wondering whether to bother with 500px.. thoughts from anyone who is or was a member there?

Absolutely Mike. Some phenomenal photography there. You always receive plenty of comment on the better shots you post. My favourite photo site.

Yeah I love 500px http://500px.com/CapturingTheNight
Go for it
One tip though if you do create a profile- They have a daily refresh at about 4:30pm AEST and this automatically drops down all the popularity scores. For example you could have something humming along at 98% and the next minute it is down to 87%. The next day after that it will be down in the 70's. So, the best time to upload something is about 5pm so that it can have the most time possible to build up popularity before it is killed by the daily refresh. If you uploaded something at say 4pm it will struggle to get much off the "ground"
All learnt through bitter experience......

Yep, Greg has a rather high popularity rating on 500px, so he knows what he's talking about

Yeah I'm sure timing doesn't apply to many of Greg's shots. Quality trumps the daily refresh.

Thanks for that information, Greg. I've had absolutely no love through 500px. My images must be crap.

What a load of bollocks. You have five images posted - you need plenty more. One secret is to post an image a day - at 5:00pm AEST as Greg has indicated. Do that for a few weeks and you'll be away.

I got put off when I wasn't getting any love for any of them, but, you're right; persistence is the key.

I'll start again now that I've got my Internet connection and computers and hard drives and all hooked up properly.

Persistence is certainly the key H. Do as Chris suggests and you will soon get noticed I'm sure. Quality will always come out on top and you have bucket loads of it. A bit of social media cross pollination can also be good. Give a shout out to your 500px profile on other sites.
