Synguider and Nexguider?

Hi everyone

Has anyone purchased any of these auto guiding ccds?

Seems like a really great idea, but how good are they?

Regards Paul.

They need a quite bright guide star to work properly. There was a review recently in Sky and Telescope. It was what they didn't say that was revealing as they gave it their usual thumbs up. I just don't trust s&t for a frank review as their mag has declined in size, relevance and critical articles these days that they are dependent on their advertisers too much. Just my 2c opinion.

They are certainly getting very mixed reviews over here in the UK.

I bought one at the end of last year.

I really don't want to turn you off them because I think they are a great idea as well...but the night I spent trying to get mine working was the single most frustrating night of my astronomical experiences.

I think that I had a faulty unit - well - I HOPE I had a faulty unit. I couldn't get a star image for the life of me.

I returned mine, and have gone back o a QHY5 + PHD. Which is actually good as I can use that combo to drift align - something I dont think you can do with the Synguider/Nexguider.

I still think a standalone guider is great if you are using a DSLR, as you can ditch the laptop.

Mixed impressions

Thank you for your input everyone!

Yes I am not convinced either, although I think the concept is fantastic, the reality of how good it is out in the field seems a little lacking.
I have read some really good objective reviews from England but nothing that influences me to purcahse one. Issues regarding locking on the guide star, actual tracking without over governing the Dec and calibration seems to be the problem.
Maybe it is like waiting for the Series 2 version of the Comomdore to be realeased until you buy it?

Regards Paul
(Unguided Moment) the band called "The Church" wrote that song by the way!.
