Horsehead and Flame Nebula

HGO palette. 6x5min subs for each filter taken on 9 January 22 from backyard deck in Melbourne.
Will get extra data when possible.


Used QHY163M and 61mm f4.5 telescope. Adam's Horsehead is the one I'd like to emulate.

Good start! As you mentioned, extra data here would be terrific. That'll help with noise and bringing those colours out, but you've got quite a bit of data already for only 30mins.
I really like the wider framing and when you add that extra data in, the top part of the image is going to really sing. Looking forward to seeing the progress on this

The HGO palette set seems to work best for me in narrowband. But I think OSC cameras lend themselves to this sort of work (all the subs count towards the total time. Also I think your camera provides nice clean data particularly in dark skies. I think my unmodified sony A7R worked best for me on orion and the horsehead it showed more blue in the subs. Since I modded the A7R - red dominates. I'll have a shot with my unmodded nikon and canon dslrs. I'll also have a bash at using my old 1970's motorised hasselblad with an old digital back).

Indeed, for some targets (like this one), you don't lose too much going with an OSC.
That said, I'd be keen to see how much Ha you pick up on your unmodded DSLRs. The curtain behind the Horsehead might not show up as much, so you'd need a lot more integration time to bring it through on such a camera.

Hi Adam,
I think for my unmodded cameras about 50percent of Ha is captured. How this translates for m42, ic434, eta carina neb, and other bright emission nebula will be an interesting exploration.
