40D Imaging Tip

Just a guideline I found to be pretty useful.
When imaging any object, with a 40D or other Canon DSLR, do make sure that, in adition to your regular protocols, you:

a) Make good and bloody sure there is a card in the slot
and
b) You have not set the Cfn to "Shoot without card"

There's 2 hours I'll never get back!

We've all done it or something similar...

You should see what 2hrs data looks like being shot through a bahtinov mask... Really annoying when you stack it the next day and think, wow, those stars look odd... then you zoom in, see the diffraction pattern and say "DOH!"

It happens.
But thanks for the tips.
I know of a certain Moderator who spent a couple of hours capturing his subs in medium jpeg.
Oh, he's done the Bart Mask trick a few times too.

I can't laugh... Its like every time I am next to my telescope I get a case of the forgetfuls.... 24x600s exposures with the "Download subframe" checkbox selected. I ended up with 4 hours worth of 700x500px crops from the center of NGC253... Really pleasant.. Didn't even swear at the time... I was well controlled.. When it happened again the next night (only lost 1hrs data the next night before I got wise) I lost my mind and called myself a lot of colourful names!

Peter - you should come up to QLD Astrofest and watch Paul image in JPG medium with his Bahtinov mask still on, JJJ imaging in JPG with 6v running through her gear instead of 12 and me shooting in subframe focus mode and forgetting to lock the dec axis on my mount wondering why dec guiding keeps failing on me.. Its a hoot!

No, but I dropped my side by side plate on my foot today. Thought I'd broken my toe. Blood everywhere. Ouch.
But don't worry, the sbs plate is fine.

Good to hear the SBS is still ok JJJ...

I dont think I've dropped anything, however I did nearly destroy the C11 once.. It was sitting on the mount, looking massive as it did.. I was about to put the counterweights on... and then I learned why we put our CW's on before our 18kg OTA... even with the RA axis locked up, it just started rotate.. I threw the CWs that were in my hands and caught the OTA with about 20cm to spare before it would have impacted the tripod legs.....

After nearly vomiting, about 15 cigarettes and beer.. I went back to the mount, put the CWs on, then put the C11 on and spent the night imaging the moon.. It was a tense moment.

Ever spent most of the night trying to balance your newt at a public viewing night and could not and decided to pack up when everyone was leaving to go home
Only to find you had left a rather large bag of silica gel in the tube
Cheers
Dave
