Darks on planetary or autoguiding?

I haven't bothered with darks on these because I figure with short exposure times, what's the point, but Firecap and PHD2 both seem to offer this. Am I missing out? Is it really going to make that much difference to either the quality of planetary images or the accuracy of the autoguiding?

Cheers
Markus

You can't imagine they would do much. But what about bias frames ?

Maybe I've misunderstood and it's more about hot pixels.

Recently started using dark library in PHD and it does seem to improve SNR. Wouldn't say it's necessary, but does seem to show some benefit.

Can't help on the planetary side of things.

Do you have to build a dark library every session (my camera is not cooled, so operating temps vary)?

Mine isn’t cooled either. ASI120MM. It remembers the library so only do once.

That's weird. Isn't the whole point of dark noise that it's temperature dependent? I thought it would have to do it all over again whenever the temperature varied by more than 2 degrees.

Strange.

Markus,
I think it's more to do with reducing/ removing annoying hot pixels.
I have a few on the Lodestar, and using darks in PHD2 certainly cleans things up.

Pretty sure you got it there. Especially as people up the gain on their cams to horrid levels it'll help. Particularly at high magnifications too.
