There are two layers of glass, the outer chamber glass (cheap) the lower one being integral to the CCD (expensive).

Most manufacturers would not entertain the thought of trying to remove the CCD slip as there is a reasonable risk of destroying the sensor, plus the sensor becomes very vulnerable after removal, so warranty's would be void.

That said, if undamaged & left alone inside it's (outer layer protected) hermetic chamber it will perform somewhat better than the glass protected CCD with slightly higher QE and no stray reflections.

As for the expense......

Yes, 35mm sized CCD's are very expensive...I have seen a Kodak (now Truesense) OEM invoice...at $3k you are getting one close to cost.

Thank you, for the explanation, Peter.

I've been using the camera the last few nights. I thought there was a fogging issue, but, I think it may have been thin cloud that was causing the foggy appearance, as the last few nights have yielded beautiful clean images.

Once I finish my current project, I'll be in touch (unless Bill gets back to me and says it's fine to send the camera to the US for heart surgery).

Thanks!

H

Well, the news was as bad as it gets.

It's the CCD coverslip that's cracked and SBIG has no way of replacing the cover.

$3,600 US to source a new sensor and between 60-90 days for it to turn up.

Bugga. If you crop the image at the line of the crack, does that help? You'll lose FOV, but the alternative doesn't seem great.

I'm with Barry on thinking that for $3600+ you are only gaining a small % of the imaging area back with a new chip. This is assuming that the chip works fine except for the upper left corner. It's certainly not ideal but that crack could have been in a much worse position!

Both my FLI cameras don't have cover slips which is an option with FLI cameras. As Peter says there is a slight increase in QE (1%) but also a reduction in some instances of minor haloing.

So as its a write off anyway there is little risk in removing it. I was not aware there are 2 layers of glass - I thought there was only 1 but don't know that.

You could potentially simply have that glass removed if possible (it usually is a Kodak option to supply without the cover slip so FLI probably get them already like that).

Greg.
