Buying a QHY9.

Ok peeps i have to bite the bullet and get myself a QHY9 because the Canon 40D has gone RIP.

The Canon gave the dreaded error 99 after making some hissing sounds.
I opened the camera and found the problem ( the mirror motor is burned ) so my niece spoke to a Canon rep and he gets me a new motor.
I just hope it works again after i put it in.

But in the mean time my dear wife decided that i needed another camera
The QHY9 comes with a filter wheel and the red, green and blue 2" filters so i only have to get a L filter.

Now my question is, what else do i need and what should i know about processing LRGB images.
Any help or pointers will be appriciated.

I am sure some of the more knowledgeable QHY9 owners will pipe up, but for now, if you have been imaging already with a DSLR then Q9 will be similar in that you will need some form of guiding, and some form of capture program. Given the previous camera the need for a field flattener will have already existed so I assume you have this.
Additionally, if you have already been stacking and calibrating with some form of processing software then carry on using this.
Biggest thing you will need is patience and the ability to learn new skills. Oh and time to image, as instead of one shot giving you a pretty picture, the Q9 needs three or four, depending on LRGB or RGB. Having said that though it IS more sensitive (or should be) so it kind of evens itself out.
Whatever you do, have fun, and don't be afraid to ask questions, I am sure you will have many.

Looking at the qhy forums, the L filter is now also supplied.

Thank you Gary but deepskystacker does not combine LRGB, so i need to know what the best program is to do that.

Thank you Robin but the L filter according to the aanet website is not included but can be had for $60 together with the 2" "T" adapter.

Brendan it looks more like my wife is very kind to me
You are very welcome to use the camera on your scope to try it out (as long as i get it back ).
And as long i will have a camera to do my pics in the mean time

You must have been a very good boy this year Martin.

Although, I must admit I've been very lucky too with permission to get a c9.25 on G8. That's why the weather has been so bad since I picked it up.
You should get a reasonable night in the next few days as I'm back on roster 6.00 am tomorrow.

Have fun with your new toy!

Darren

PS, Images plus should be able to combine and process your images. Although being on the Mac at the moment, I can't start it up to check!

Hi Martin.
OK, so DSS is out, what else do you have, or what will you capture with. It could be time to think of getting a program that allows capture and "processing", something like Maxim DL, AstroArt, Images Plus or similar?
Nebulosity is another, and a good one too.

If it doesn't come with any, and you don't have any, then the world is your oyster.
I like Maxim, or AstroArt, but know many that favour Images Plus, or Nebulosity.
You also need to ensure the software package you settle out on includes the ability to make the CFW work. Maxim and AstroArt do, the others I am not sure.
Theo should be able to help here though as he uses the gear as well as selling it. It can be a personal thing though, software, but most have trial periods, so try them before you buy them. Canvass what others are using as well.

You might wanna check with theo. I'm expecting 4 filters to arrive with my qhy9 order and I don;t want a T adapter, I want a wheel adapter.

I use maxim with my current mono camera.

I hope you didn't buy the last QHY9 Robin
It would be good if the L filter is included and the wheel adapter.
I just wished that a list of ALL inclusions and also exclusions would be listed on websites ( at least all the inclusions) so you could see what you should buy as an extra.

I could d/l a trial of maxim once i have the camera (still have to order it).

Also there is no ordering on the aanet website and also no payment details listed.
If it all goes by phone and email then there will be lots of emailing and lots of time lost
I just like to order via a website and pay at the same time

Shame about the Canon packing it. What a bummer. You can't go wrong with the QHY9 especially now. There are some crazy sales around $2k including filter wheel. Best deal around at the moment I reckon. Merry Xmas

I nearly bought one couple of weeks ago. I think it was starizona or some mob in the US. It was all over the QHYCCD and Starklabs yahoo group at the time. Let me check my emails and I'll post the link. I think it runs until the end of December. I can confirm 2K USD and that it was for the QHY9 mono I think WITH the filter wheel. That's because the QHY9 color's coming out and SBIG also is releasing their $2.5K model.

ps: check here and here. it was CCD Labs not Starizona. Seems to include also the filter set and it runs until March 2010?

Hmm the QHY9 color is $1499 US on the ccdlabs site.
No price on the mono version.
The whole problem will be warranty , i dont want to send it back to the US to get it fixed.
Also i dont think that SBIG will give a camera with a guide chip for that price.
