Uppsala old observatory, Sweden

This is a follow up to the article "Old Swedish observatories" I translated not long time ago. We made a visit to Uppsala old observatory which is placed in a beautiful park almost in center of Uppsala in Sweden.

I took some photos from the visit and have tried to find some information to it:

I guess light pollution would be a problem there now? Beautiful spot for it though.

It will be even more exciting, there are guided tours on tuesdays but on hold now because of the corona. I hope to have an inside report of the main building before the end of the year. I was yesterday told that all instrument are there, don't nknow if they ment he old instrument or newer.

The observatory in Siding Spring, was it a professional observatory or an amateur ? How did it get the name Uppsala Observatory ?

Yes, heavy light pollution, but nice to look at the old buildings.

Interesting to read, I put your link in the report.

I also added something news my friend told me, the instrument in the mainbulding is still there, from 19th. One of them is the exiting double refractor !

The Southern Uppsala 0.5 m Schmidt

G'day Lars
My name is Barry Gilbert, I'm a founding member of the Tamworth Regional Astronomy Club (TRAC). We have recently acquired the Uppsala 0.5 metre Schmidt telescope from siding spring. It is a rather large heavy telescope, that we disassembled for cheaper crane handling and transport. It is 178 kilometres from Tamworth. The following links are: The history of the "Southern Uppsala" and history of our club.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uppsal...midt_Telescope

https://www.tamworthastronomy.com.au/

I will attach some images of the Uppsala in the a following post.

Regards
Barry

Hi Barry,
That was a really big telescope your club has purchased. And what an interesting astronomy club you have over there.

I put part of your information on my homepage, let me know if it's okay, look at bottom of page:

http://www.astrofriend.eu/astronomy/...servatory.html

I can make a separate page about your telescope and club if you want, but need some photos as a complement. Use my contact information on the www.astrofriend.eu page.

Thanks a lot for the information !

Thanks for the post Lars.
The 50cm Uppsala telescope Barry posted about lived for 25 years on top of Mt Stromlo in Canberra. It was moved to Siding Spring Mountain in 1982. The dome on Mt Stromlo was destroyed in the wildfire that swept the mountain 20 years ago.
The Uppsala Dome site now houses the McNamara-Saunders Teaching Telescopes in which Geoff McNamara spends his evenings teaching young college students the wonders of the heavens.
