Jupiter Timelapse

This I shot on the 27th, seeing was average at the start of the sequence, then it started to improve until my Camera's memory card said Card Full! I had planned to take a lot more frames so when this happened it was very frustrating. I got 16 frames over a 40min period. Struggled to achieve a GIF file under 200kb for this post so the quality isn't great and it's rather small but anyway it was just a bit of fun with the DSLR on the 8 inch Newtonian. The single shot is one captured during some of the better seeing of the session.

Mick,
Top effort! You've bagged a great Jupiter before the planet season comes to a close.

Cheers Anthony, Saturn is winning the race to the west but Jupiter is still well placed for a while. Don't give up on those gas giants yet!

Thanks David, glad you liked it, pity the seeing wasn't more consistent, makes the animation look like an old movie film.

Thanks Marc, they required a fair bit of processing to achieve but I think it's worth it in the end.

Thanks Peter, maybe not as good as it gets but you're always at the mercy of the seeing conditions. It was the best I could do at the time.

Wow Mick,
I love the animation. Despite what you say about the early seeing, the frames look great under animation. Very cool!

This is amazing! What size barlow was used (if it was)? I'm keen to start trying planetary work using my 8" RC but have been nervous coming from deep sky stuff. This animation may have just motivated me to try.

Glad you liked the animation Paul, you're pretty lucky if you get good seeing during the time spent on capturing frames for an animation. This was 16 captures over 40 mins.

There are plenty of better ones out there Adrian if you do a Google search. I used my DSLR for this because it's the only OSC I own capable of connecting to my telescope. I used a 5X Powemate and video crop mode, which is a feature of the Canon 550d. My scope is 1000mm f5 so with the Powermate, that brings it up to 5m f25. Not sure what your scope is, 2000mm f10? You'd probably use a 2X Barlow for f20? Glad I've motivated you, it's challenging but a lot of fun as well.

Thanks Russell, I don't think I've had a session where something doesn't catch you out or tests your patience. I think it's just part of the experience. My intention was to take enough frames to have the GRS rotate into the darkened limb of the planet and disappear from view.

Mick,
Great composition old pal. Reminds me of the Cylons in Battlestar Gallactica and their red eye darting left to right....

Top effort!
