Red to green zone?

Hi,
I currently live in a a massively light polluted area in Geelong, Victoria. The maps show it is a red zone (1km from the centre of Geelong). We are currently looking to move to an area outside Geelong that looks to be in a green zone (Batesford) - though the light dome from Geelong will still be visible of course. This should be a massive improvement, as I'm currently unable to take any decent pics - I just have fun playing with the gear I have. Wondering what sort of improvement I will get with a move to the green zone? Anyone else done a similar move and can give me an idea of what to expect? Likely to be able to take some decent pics?

TIA
Gary

Hi Gary,
You'll get a huge improvement. Based on your approximate stated locations you'd go from a sky brightness of something around 1.9 mcd/m2 to something around 0.4 mcd/m2 or around 5 times darker. Given that the darkest skies are around 0.17 mcd/m2 you're doing well. That is based on lightpollutionmap data from the WorldAtlas 2015 dataset.

Best
JA

^ I agree - that's exactly where I sourced the data for my earlier comments.

Oh wow! I'm in an orange zone soon graduating to red. If that makes you feel any better.

I will see your red and raise you ... my RED/pink/white in Melbourne is 3.1 mcd/m2 or SQM 18.8 according to the lightpollutionmap WorldAtlas 2015 dataset. It's definitely not as bad as the CBD, but....

I see my future in imaging solely with NIR at very long FL to narrow the fov and gradients.

The spit might affect the seeing a bit, but the tasting will be out of this world !!

Hi guys,
sorry for the late thank you for your inputs, but have been negotiating to buy the property at Batesford (successfully). I will have good views to the south, north and east. West is blocked because the property is on the side of a hill and a line of native trees further blocks things. the night sky is soooooo much better than where I am now. The other bonus is that I now have a 17m x 7m workshop as well....
cheers
Gary
