Sci-Fi Movies that just don't cut it.

Perusing the TV guide to what is on offer on Free to Air TV tonight ... Arrival ..this bored me to tears but not as much as Ad Astra. Oh ... and I refuse to watch Gravity because two actors I can't stomach watching, George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, are the main stars not that the movie could induce motion sickness as much as these two acting.

I second your comments. And might I add Matthew McConneghy (Interstellar) to the list of Actors to be Banned from Sci-fi movies. Clearly the movie industry thinks they need a name that the common folk might recognise from every other piece of trash they put out as entertainment.
Clooney has an interesting history in Sci-fi, starting back in 2000 with Solaris (which i have on DVD)..

"Space Above and Beyond" is a cruel and unusual punishment.
So bad in fact, that whilst it was being shown in the sharehouse, I took extra shifts at work just to escape at night.

Interstellar is one of my fave flicks. It'd be better without Anne Hathaway's character however.

Actually, that's no bad thing IMHO. Investing in at least one good name (a decent actor) means the producers have probably also invested in good writers and a decent director (as the good name probably wouldn't come aboard otherwise). That doesn't always mean the premise is credible, but it's more likely to have a followable plot and dialogue that hangs together.

Resident Alien wasn't bad - a bit patchy, but a fresh look at the aliens-amongst-us themeand worth a go. And, hey, it's free to stream.

I recently got Picard on BluRay, so I'm going to start that soon.

Stowaway. We were unfortunate enough to watch this the other night. The actors were good, but the script was woeful.

..
One movie I really enjoyed that didn't have a big name cast at the time other than David Keith was Pitch Black. Filmed here in Australia in Coober Pedy. I not sure if this made Vin Diesel a big name in Hollywood but it is the first movie I noticed him particularly the voice. Then they did the horrid off shoot Riddick movies.

I have to admit to hoarding what some would consider appalling sci-fi movies, but it amuses me greatly.

Titles of note include:- The Robot Monster, Voyage to the Plant of Prehistoric Women, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, Hercules Against the Moonmen, Killers from Space, Zontar the Thing fom Mars.......................the list is endless.

Haha. I sat through the whole movie, 'Arrival', last night. It was sooooo slow and not much was happening. I almost switched it off half way through, but I just had to find out what the aliens wanted so I stuck it out to the end. Apparently, they didn't want much. There's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back.

There are only 4 SciFi movies I ever rewatch:
1. Alien
2. Forbidden Planet
3. Solaris (Soviet original, not the garbage US "remake")
4. Bladerunner (original)

I truly can't even sit through 2001 any more. Eject me out the pod bay doors.

If you mean the original theatrical release of Blade Runner with the voice-over, I agree with you. Since that movie made sense.

But most everyone raves about the various Directors cuts where Dekkard is a replicant but doesn't know it. It violates the internal logic of the movie, where his replicant girlfriend is supposed to be the most advanced replicant. It requires the whole Police Department to not notice that a replicant with no verifiable past history has been inserted amongst them.
Regards,
Renato

Funny how perceptions vary.

I think Space Above And Beyond was one of the most gripping SF series ever.
And Interstellar put me to sleep.

Arrival: only thing I enjoyed was the off-beat, creepy soundtrack.

Interstellar: only thing I enjoyed was....let me see...the only thing I enjoyed was...ok the robot premise was interesting.

The premise of Interstellar was decent, but the movie could have been so much better without Matthew McConaughey. That drawling accent always sounds jarring to me. His performance in Contact also comes to mind as being less than memorable.
