This discussion is interesting for reason unconnected with the telescope itself. It shows us how cynical and negative we have become in our thinking. These days, more time and energy seems be devoted to finding things wrong than right. Reasons “why it won’t work” than “why it will.”

I suppose the Hubble experience has conditioned our thinking to some extent, but I think it is more than that. We’ve just become a bunch of what my parents would have called “misery guts”.

One can imagine the levels of stress and anxiety building up over there. The people closely associated with this project will not have ever experienced a more important event; nor will they ever do so again. This represents their entire life’s work in most cases.

I agree with you Peter, when did we lose our sense of adventure? When did advancements in technology make achievements of science and engineering become “impossible” or “unbelievable”?

The folk on this project are highly skilled and have been working tirelessly on this. I for one will be cheering for these folk and hoping it all goes to plan. I’m excited about what the new scope will show us.

We could all use something to hope for. That’s the only way to fight the negativity that appears to have bloomed these past couple of years
