I'm not yet able to get Canon EOS viewer to recognise the RAW files, yes, I have the latest updates.
And DSS, while it will process the RAW, will only give 1/4 of the final image, the rest is cropped out of existance.
ATM I'm downloading the raw to DPP and converting to tiff. Then processing in DSS.
I'll contact the people I bought the camera from next week, get their opinion.

if you download the latest version of DSS it'll fix the problem of only getting 1/4 of your image. it's a bug in the raw converter from a few versions ago..

JJJ, do you have the latest firmware loaded in the 550d, (from memory there have been banding issues addressed by firmware in other models) also have you tried an exposure without the camera connected to the PC, in case there is noise getting in from the USB connection.

that's weird.. i had exactly that problem with DSS stacking images from other people with recent SLRs but the upgrade (DSS 3.3.2) fixed the problem for me? ..

I tried processing it on my old lappy running XP, thinking it might be a conflict with Windoze 7. No difference.
Personally, I think it's a sign Phil.
Time to change to a CCD.
What do you think?

Been reading this post with interest. My 300D died recently and I was considering a 550D as replacement. Ended up getting a 2nd hand 450D on ebay. Are there similar problems with this model ? Not given it a real tryout yet.

As far as I know the 450D is a good one.

If you want to send me some RAW files, I'll run it through my DSS and see what happens. Try using digitalpigeon.com to send files to hello 'at' philhart.com (even an hours worth of exposure would be fine if you can manage the upload).

CCD is certainly the way to go if you want to take it seriously. my experience has not been painless but the results are great when you can get everything working.

cheers
Phil

I have no problem with PSCS5 and Raw files...and when I do make Tiff files for PSP they are not compressed, so don't understand why this would be a disadvantage...but then again, I am not using specilized astro software for processing and still only using it for day time use.
I have nearly recouped my losses and ready to splash out... I love my eos 550D for daytime shots, so will go with something else at any rate.
