Underwater photos.

I was over the coast and thought how nice to float around on a malibu board with a camera in a water proof box and snap stuff going on in the rocky areas... so has anyone done similar and can point to areas that need attention for such a pursuit?

Hi,

I'd try anywhere round the rocks at Cape Byron. It is a marine sanctuary. My son took some good shots there.

Cheers

Hi

The Tallebudgera Creek (Qld) is a good spot - between the bridge and the mouth. Try the north bank. There are a few nice little reefs there that have a reasonable selection of colourful fish. Your board should go quite nice there as well. A good benefit is that you can float around at high or low tide.

The two difficulties I had were focus and lighting. I don't know what the ratio is, but the light levels drop off fairly quick (with depth). For the focus, I just adjusted the shutter speed to get a nice field depth. It seems to work.

If you don't already have a waterproof box for your camera, when you go to choose, I spoke to the staff at Photocontinental. There is a lot of choice out there and I found the quality to vary quite a bit, especially with the clear perspex front plate.

I have a pentax optio WP - it is better for shallow stuff, i had tried to use it snorkeling, but fish too far away slow to hit shutter to get good shots,
